Ridgewood NJ, in a groundbreaking development, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first-ever nasal spray to treat potentially severe allergic reactions. The new spray, marketed under the brand name Neffy, offers a needle-free alternative to traditional injectable epinephrine products like the EpiPen, which has been in use since 1987.

Neffy is designed for both adults and children who weigh at least 66 pounds. It is administered as a single spray into one nostril, making it a more user-friendly option for those who may be hesitant to use injections. Clinical studies have shown that Neffy achieves blood concentrations of epinephrine comparable to those from injections, along with similar physiological effects, including increased blood pressure and heart rate.

Epinephrine, also known as adrenaline, is a crucial hormone used in treating anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. It works by stimulating the heart, relaxing muscles, and constricting blood vessels to improve breathing, providing rapid relief in emergency situations.

Allergies affect nearly 50 million Americans, and each year, over 30,000 people in the U.S. visit emergency rooms due to anaphylaxis. Unfortunately, more than 2,000 of these cases result in hospitalizations, and over 100 lead to fatalities.

With the approval of Neffy, those at risk of severe allergic reactions now have a more convenient and less invasive option for emergency treatment, potentially improving outcomes and saving lives.
