Two of the nation’s top environmental officials are scheduled to attend a public meeting in Ringwood on Monday where residents say they are growing weary of waiting for a cleanup of the 500-acre site where Ford Motor Co. dumped contaminated waste more than 40 years ago.

Mathy Stanislaus, the assistant administrator from the federal Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response, and Judith Enck, administrator of the EPA’s Region 2, are planning to hear residents’ concerns and recommendations at a meeting at a local church.

“We want to get back to the community and give them the opportunity to raise concerns with senior officials,” said EPA spokeswoman Bonnie Bellow.

Ford Motor Co. used the Ringwood site as a dumping ground in the late 1960s for paint sludge and industrial waste generated by a manufacturing plant it operated at the time in Mahwah. During that period, the factory produced millions of gallons of paint sludge.

While the cleanup has removed tens of thousands of tons of paint sludge and tainted soil, contamination remains in some areas.
