Wood-Ridge NJ, students and staff at Catherine E. Doyle Elementary School in Wood-Ridge, NJ, were safely evacuated Tuesday afternoon after a small fire broke out in a construction area of the school. Thankfully, no injuries or structural damage were reported, and the school returned to its regular schedule on Wednesday.

Fire Breaks Out in Construction Zone

Firefighters responded to a 2:19 p.m. fire call at Doyle Elementary School, where construction materials on the second floor of a new wing under development had caught fire. According to Mayor Paul Sarlo, the blaze was traced back to a heater malfunction, which ignited construction equipment and temporary scaffolding.

Members of the construction crew quickly extinguished the fire, but a plume of smoke was visible over the area.

Swift and Safe Evacuation

The school, which serves students from kindergarten through third grade, was immediately evacuated as emergency responders conducted a thorough safety check of the building. By 2:55 p.m., after confirming no lingering smoke or hazardous gases, all occupants were allowed back inside.

Parents were instructed to pick up their children from Wood-Ridge Avenue entrances, and the school successfully completed dismissal by 3:45 p.m.

Construction and Classes Resume

With a safety review completed Wednesday morning, construction on the new wing was set to resume as scheduled. The borough Fire Department also praised school staff and Wood-Ridge police officers for their quick and orderly evacuation, while Mayor Sarlo commended the students for their calm and cooperative response.
