HACKENSACK, NJ — A fast-moving house fire broke out on Maple Hill Drive Saturday afternoon, drawing a massive response from the Hackensack Fire Department and several surrounding mutual aid companies.

The fire, which was reported at 416 Maple Hill Dr., began in a first-floor bathroom before rapidly traveling through the walls and extending into the second floor and attic. Thanks to a swift response by the Hackensack Fire Department’s First Platoon, the blaze was contained before it could consume the entire structure.

“Accidental” Blaze Triggers Urgent Response

Under the command of Deputy Chief Pete Greco, firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames showing from the residence. The family living in the home was fortunately already outside on the lawn when the fire broke out and reported no injuries.

The Firefighting Operation:

  • Primary Search: Crews performed immediate searches to ensure no residents were trapped inside.

  • Aggressive Attack: Two hose lines were deployed to knock down the main body of fire on the first floor and intercept the extension in the attic.

  • Salvage & Overhaul: By 3 p.m., crews were performing “overhaul” operations—opening walls to check for hidden hot spots to prevent a rekindle.

One Firefighter Injured

While the residents escaped safely, the battle took a small toll on the first responders. Hackensack Fire Capt. Kurt Nemeczek confirmed that one firefighter suffered a minor injury during the operation. The firefighter was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) for evaluation and is expected to be okay.

Mutual Aid Supports the City

Because of the intensity of the fire and the need for manpower, the city utilized its mutual aid network. While Hackensack crews battled the flames on Maple Hill Drive, departments from Englewood, Teaneck, and Hasbrouck Heights assisted on-site and provided station coverage for the rest of the city.

Fire officials have officially determined the cause of the fire to be accidental.
