Oakland NJ, a quiet Friday afternoon in Oakland, New Jersey, took a dramatic turn on January 2 as a massive house fire broke out on Ramapo Valley Road. The blaze, which marked the second significant residential fire in Bergen County that day, drew a massive response from nearly a dozen surrounding fire departments.

Inside the Battle: Second-Story Flames
The Oakland NJ Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 3:34 p.m. to reports of smoke and fire at a residence. Upon arrival, emergency units were met with heavy fire gushing from the second-story windows on the front and side of the home.
Firefighters acted decisively, entering the burning structure to conduct an interior attack. Their rapid response allowed them to “knock down” the bulk of the fire before it could spread to neighboring properties.
The Good News: Despite the intensity of the flames and heavy smoke damage, officials confirmed that no injuries were reported among residents or first responders.
A Community Effort: Mutual Aid Support
The scale of the fire required a coordinated effort from across the region. The Oakland Fire Department extended their gratitude to a long list of departments that provided on-scene support and station coverage, including:
-
Franklin Lakes, Mahwah, Waldwick, and Wyckoff
-
Pompton Lakes, Midland Park, and North Haledon
-
Wayne Fire Department and the Oakland First Aid Squad
-
Bergen County OEM
Traffic Alerts: Major Road Closures and Detours
The firefighting operations caused significant disruptions for local commuters. Due to the placement of fire hoses and emergency equipment, Ramapo Valley Road was closed between Franklin Avenue and Navajo Way.
Police advised an official detour for residents:
-
Navajo Way to Lakeshore Drive
-
Powdermill Lane to Cedar Street
-
Courthouse Place
Fire Safety Reminder
With two house fires occurring in Bergen County in a single day, local fire officials are reminding residents to check their smoke detectors and be mindful of heating hazards during the winter months.
“Our thoughts go out to the residents of the home,” the OFD shared in a social media post, acknowledging the difficult start to the New Year for the displaced family.
