Allendale, NJ – In a high-profile legal battle with significant political implications, former FBI Director James Comey pleaded not guilty yesterday to criminal charges stemming from testimony he gave to Congress over five years ago.

The 64-year-old is facing charges of lying to Congress and obstructing a congressional proceeding. His trial is officially set to begin on January 5th and is expected to last approximately two to three days.

The Indictment and Allegations

The not guilty plea comes less than two weeks after a federal grand jury handed down an indictment against Comey. The charges are focused on his sworn testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2020.

At the heart of the indictment is a specific exchange where Comey was asked if he had ever authorized someone at the FBI to serve as an anonymous source to the media regarding the Trump-Russia investigation. He allegedly responded with the answer, “no.”

Prosecutors contend that by allegedly lying under oath, Comey interfered with Congress’ ongoing investigation. Conversely, Comey’s legal team has mounted a robust defense, arguing the entire case is politically motivated.

A Rare Case with High Stakes

If convicted, James Comey faces a potential sentence of up to five years in prison.

While cases involving former high-ranking law enforcement officials are rare, history does offer a precedent. Another former FBI head faced similar charges back in the 1970s following the Watergate scandal for allegedly authorizing illegal break-ins targeting a domestic terror group—though those charges were eventually dropped.

All eyes will be on the federal courthouse in January as this politically charged case, touching on some of the most sensitive investigations of the last decade, goes to trial.
