HACKENSACK, NJ—The massive, long-vacant retail space on Route 17 South in Hackensack has finally found a vibrant new anchor. The former Pathmark building, which closed nearly a decade ago after the supermarket chain’s bankruptcy, is now home to G Mart, a major new Asian specialty grocery store.

The opening of the approximately 25,000-square-foot G Mart in late September injects new life into the highly-trafficked corridor, which has struggled to fill the void left when the 58,000-square-foot Pathmark shut its doors in 2015. While a Planet Fitness occupies a portion of the original structure, a large section of the building has sat empty for years.

A Global Culinary Destination for Bergen County

G Mart, which operates three other successful locations in New York and Connecticut, is set to become a go-to destination for diverse culinary needs across Bergen County. Owner Jeff Gee emphasizes the store’s unparalleled selection of imported goods:

“We carry a lot of products from different countries in Asia—the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, China, Japan—a lot of sauces, seasonings and snacks. We have a big selection of those. Much more than what you’ll see in any American market.”

Shoppers will find more than just dry goods. The store boasts extensive sections for fresh produce, meat, and seafood, catering to the growing demand for authentic and hard-to-find ingredients.

Beyond Groceries: Cookware and Future Bakery

G Mart is positioning itself as a comprehensive retail experience, carrying an impressive array of Asian housewares and cookware, including steaming pots, dishes, and bowls imported from various global sources.

While the store currently focuses on groceries, a major addition is already in the works:

  • Future Plans: G Mart plans to add a full-service bakery section and intends to partner with a local bakery to supply fresh goods, adding another layer of convenience for customers.

Hackensack’s Grocery Boom Continues

G Mart’s arrival at 405 Route 17 South signifies a continued revitalization of the Hackensack retail landscape. It is the second major grocery store to open in the city in recent months, following the debut of Lidl‘s 23,250-square-foot store in the downtown Print House Development in July.

With its vast selection of specialty items, G Mart is providing essential competition and choice, turning a once-empty retail landmark into a thriving hub for shoppers seven days a week (9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.).
