Former TWA Flight 800 investigators say new evidence points to missile strike, want new probe

MINEOLA, N.Y. — Former investigators are pushing to reopen the probe into the 1996 crash of TWA Flight 800 off the coast of New York, saying new evidence points to the often-discounted theory that a missile strike may have downed the jumbo jet.
The New York-to-Paris flight crashed July 17, 1996, just minutes after the jetliner took off from John F. Kennedy Airport, killing all 230 people aboard. Among those killed were flight attendant Jill Ziemkiewicz of Rutherford, and former Tenafly Borough Administrator Robert Miller and his wife, Elizabeth.
The effort to reopen the probe is being made in tandem with the release next month of a documentary that features the testimony of former investigators who raise doubts about the National Transportation Safety Board’s conclusion that the crash was caused by a center fuel tank explosion, probably caused by a spark from a short-circuit in the wiring.
“We don’t know who fired the missile,” said Jim Speer, an accident investigator for the Air Line Pilots Association, one of those seeking a new review of the probe. “But we have a lot more confidence that it was a missile.”

Witnesses saw the arc of a missile……
This was a proven design. The accident happenned in 1996. THese planes were originally flown commercially around 1970. This was 26 years and a few million flight hours on hundreds of planes later. There is NO WAY there is a problem with the fuel tanks. It was an easy ‘out’ to close the case. As a pilot, I never believed this as a cause and always believed it to be a bomb or a missle.

I couldn’t believe the NBC Today show actually dug up retired local FBI head James Calstrohm from the crypt this morning (Thursday, 6/20/2013) to defend his indefensible 1996 investigation. He appeared immediately after a credible and well-informed critic of his investigation who called Calstrohm out by name. In response, Calstrohm was his usual condescending, oafish self, indiscriminately insulting anyone who would dare to question the FBI’s investigation or its foolish conclusions.
The thing I remember most about Calstrohm from the months after the TWA flight 800 accident were these three words that he uttered in anger and frustration to a caller to Bob Grant’s radio program on ABC (who was complaining loudly to Bob about the utter garbage the US government was trying to fob off on us at to the cause of this accident): “Get a Life!”.
At the time the TWA flight 800 investigation was thrust in Calstrohm’s lap in the summer of 1996, all Calstrohm had been planning to do was retire quietly from the FBI. The fact that he was forced to carry Clinton’s water to prevent him from going down in flames in his re-election bid was clearly chapping Calstrohm’s a$$. Of course, my heart bled for him as I dutifully played the worlds smallest violin.
This event (the corrupt TWA flight 800 investigation) demonstrated to all who had eyes to see and ears to hear that the US government was ready, willing, and able to lie to its people in a big way. Since Clinton’s successful re-election bid, the lies have only been getting bigger, and the damage they cause, more and more calamitous. When are the American people going to finally stand up and effectively defend their country against these depredations?
