ENGLEWOOD, NJ — A massive four-alarm fire broke out Saturday afternoon in a three-story brick apartment building at 81 Grand Avenue, drawing emergency response units from multiple neighboring towns and forcing the evacuation of residents.
The fire, which began in the basement just after noon, quickly extended to the first floor, according to Englewood Fire Chief Jeff Kaplan. Despite the challenges posed by extreme heat and the size of the complex, firefighters successfully contained the blaze without any reported injuries.
🚒 Multi-Town Response to Grand Avenue Fire
As the fire escalated, the Englewood Fire Department received mutual aid from departments in Teaneck, Tenafly, Ridgefield Park, and Hackensack, among others. The Hackensack Fire Department’s mobile support unit was also on site to assist.
“High temperatures and the large footprint of the apartment building significantly hampered operations,” said Chief Kaplan.
🚧 Grand Avenue Closed, Residents Displaced
While no injuries were reported among residents or emergency personnel, several occupants were displaced by the fire. Grand Avenue was closed to traffic for hours as crews worked to extinguish the blaze and assess structural damage.
By 2:30 p.m., firefighters were still on the scene managing hot spots and assessing fire spread.
🏗️ Structure Evaluated, Investigation Underway
The Englewood Building Department was on site to evaluate the structural integrity of the apartment building. Meanwhile, fire investigators are actively working to determine the cause of the fire.
Chief Kaplan emphasized that safety remains the top priority and credited the coordinated response of local fire departments with preventing what could have been a much worse outcome.
