Ridgewood’s Green Maroons Kick Off the Season with a Cleanup at Dunham Trail

Ridgewood NJ, the Ridgewood High School Green Maroons have officially launched their season with a successful cleanup at one of the village’s hidden gems: Dunham Trail. The dedicated student group put their new waders and trash pickers to good use, helping to preserve a beautiful and historic natural space for the entire community.
Dunham Trail: A Peaceful Oasis with a Rich History
Tucked between Grove Street and Spring Avenue, Dunham Trail is a serene, 1.75-acre park featuring a quarter-mile walking path along the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook. The trail offers picturesque views of two small dams, a sandstone wall, and a vibrant ecosystem filled with native trees, shrubs, wildflowers, birds, and mammals.
The park has a fascinating history, with a portion of the land originally donated to the village in 1921. It was later named in honor of Dr. Anna Dunham, a remarkable woman who maintained strong ties to Ridgewood for 60 years. Dr. Dunham, a graduate of Wellesley College and Cornell University, was a dedicated consultant to Ridgewood schools’ outdoor education program. She was known for her “enthusiastic instruction” and her ability to help young people “understand and appreciate the bounty of nature.”
The Ridgewood Wildscape Association, founded in 1976, serves as a living memorial to her legacy, promoting the preservation of undeveloped land and providing nature education for the community.
Community Action for a Cleaner Environment
The Green Maroons’ cleanup efforts are a prime example of a new generation of students taking an active role in environmental conservation. By cleaning up the trail, they are honoring Dr. Dunham’s passion for nature education and ensuring that this peaceful space remains a resource for everyone.
The cleanup highlights the importance of community involvement in maintaining public spaces. Whether it’s a student group or an individual resident, every effort to pick up litter and respect nature makes a difference. As a reminder, dogs are welcome on the trail, but they must be on a leash and owners are expected to clean up after them to help keep the trail clean and beautiful.
