At approximately 5:45 a.m., the Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department (HHFD) was requested by the Port Authority to assist in managing the incident. The overturned tanker was leaking jet fuel onto the tarmac, creating a hazardous situation that required immediate action to prevent environmental contamination and fire risk.

🚒 Mutual Aid Fire Departments Mobilized

Chief 61 of Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department arrived first on the scene, followed shortly by Squad 1, with mutual aid being rapidly deployed from neighboring towns. Fire engines from the following departments supported the emergency effort:

  • Wood-Ridge

  • Moonachie

  • Little Ferry

  • Carlstadt

  • Saddle Brook Ladder

  • Garfield Engine

These departments were instrumental in establishing a continuous water supply, maintaining safety perimeters, and ensuring personnel rotation throughout the prolonged operation.

⏱️ 9-Hour Response Operation

The emergency team worked tirelessly until approximately 3:00 p.m., when the operation was successfully de-escalated. During that time:

  • Jet fuel was safely transferred from the overturned tanker to a secondary transport unit

  • Specialized units worked to upright the tanker

  • Once safe, the site was turned over to Bergen County Hazmat, Port Authority Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF), and supporting agencies

Thanks to excellent coordination and mutual aid, no injuries were reported, and the environmental threat was mitigated without escalation.

👏 Community & First Responder Thanks

A heartfelt THANK YOU was extended by Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department to all mutual aid departments involved in the early morning response and those who provided backup coverage throughout the day.

Their rapid deployment and professional execution exemplify the strength and preparedness of Bergen County’s emergency response network.

  1. Before everyone gets bent out of shape over this, Jet fuel is just kerosene refined to a higher standard with anti algae additives. A lot less potent than the gasoline tankers that routinely roll over on the roads
