New Year, Higher Price: The Mandated Gas Tax Increase

Ridgewood NJ, New Jersey motorists should brace for a price hike at the pump starting January 1, 2026. The State Department of the Treasury, following a mandatory annual review, announced that the total state tax rate on gasoline will increase by 4.2 cents per gallon. This increase is necessary to fund the state’s critical Transportation Trust Fund (TTF), which finances roads, bridges, and mass transit projects across New Jersey.

State Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio confirmed the increase, noting that it is a direct result of the 2024 law (Chapter 7), which gradually raises the state’s funding target for infrastructure through Fiscal Year 2029.

“Due to the new statutory target, and because actual consumption has trended below last fiscal year’s levels, our analysis of the new formula dictates a 4.2 cent increase this coming January,” said State Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio.

The change is calculated based on two separate taxes—the fixed Motor Fuels Tax and the adjustable Petroleum Products Gross Receipt Tax (PPGRT).

The PPGRT is rising because the state needs to hit a higher annual revenue goal (the Highway Fuel Cap for FY 2026 is set at $2.115 billion) and because fuel consumption is projected to be 1.0% below last year’s levels. When consumption drops, the tax rate must rise to meet the dedicated funding goal.

Fuel Type Old Total Tax Rate (Cents) New Total Tax Rate (Cents) Total Increase
Gasoline 44.9 cents 49.1 cents +4.2 cents
Diesel Fuel 51.9 cents 56.1 cents +4.2 cents

The Purpose: Funding New Jersey’s Infrastructure

While the tax increase hits the wallet, the revenue generated is constitutionally dedicated to one thing: transportation infrastructure.

  • Transportation Trust Fund (TTF): Chapter 7 mandates that the TTF program receive nearly $11 billion over five years to support critical improvements to New Jersey’s aging roadways, bridges, and rail systems.

  • Fixing the Roads: This dedicated funding ensures that state agencies, including the NJ Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and NJ Transit, have the resources to advance capital projects, prioritizing safety and state-of-good-repair initiatives.

The annual adjustment mechanism ensures that the TTF remains solvent without constantly requiring legislative intervention.

Decoding the Formula: Why the Rate Changes

The annual gas tax rate is not arbitrary; it is determined by a strict statutory formula defined in the 2024 law, which factors in two key variables:

  1. Meeting the Revenue Cap: Adjusting the rate to ensure the state meets the statutory Highway Fuel Cap for the current fiscal year (in this case, $2.115 billion for FY 2026, plus a $23.8 million shortfall from FY 2025).

  2. Consumption Data: Adjusting the rate based on projected fuel consumption. If people drive less or use more fuel-efficient cars (leading to lower consumption), the rate must be increased to generate the mandated revenue needed for the TTF.

Final Takeaway: The 4.2 cent increase is a required measure to guarantee New Jersey has the necessary funds—roughly $2 billion annually—to repair and maintain its vast transportation network.

  2. This is the same money KK was bragging about getting some pennies from last week, and the increase is primarily to pay off bond holders. Understand that Evan?

  3. The 250 fee for electric vehicles is WELL BELOW what they should pay.
They are heavy and as such cause more wear and tear on the roads than normal vehicles.
They should pay at least $1000 per year like the rest of us do (via gas tax)
Since NJ is a sanctuary state full of illegal immigrants who work cheap, they should be used on the non-skilled jobs at minimum wage instead of highly paid union workers.. and the tax would be chopped in half

  4. Just the beginning. Wait til radical left Sherrill gets her hooks in ur pockets.

Her transition task force includes Onyx Equities representation.
Low income housing coming our way .

  5. Gasoline at most NJ stations is under $3 for regular gas. Our beloved Democrats will raise the price of gasoline and they will blame Trump.

  6. It wouldn’t be so horrible if the effing roads were actually fixed. Democrats would rather fund illegal immigrants than their citizens. Amazing. But your retards keep electing them.

  7. And yet they won the election
    Go figure.
