The Story Behind the Seizure
The gold bars came into the township’s possession through a process known as asset forfeiture after the occupants of the vehicle denied ownership of the valuable cargo.
According to the police report from the 2024 traffic stop:
“Both occupants denied ownership of the gold and denied knowing that the gold was even in the vehicle.”
With the owner unable to be determined, the Mahwah Police Department moved to claim ownership through the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. The gold was officially relinquished to the township in August 2025.
