GLEN ROCK, NJ — A group of quick-thinking citizens teamed up with a Glen Rock police officer to stop a suspected shoplifter who ran from a CVS store on Rock Road, authorities said.
The incident happened around 9:57 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26, when the CVS store manager reported that a man had fled with more than $200 worth of stolen items, according to Glen Rock Police Chief Dean Ackermann.
The suspect, identified as Michael Hand, 33, of Highland Lakes, allegedly stole $244 worth of deodorant, body wash, eye drops, a hair-cutting kit, and candy before running out of the store.
Citizens Pointed Police to the Suspect
Officer Andrew Magro responded to the scene and was aided by several nearby citizens who pointed out the fleeing suspect, police said.
Hand reportedly tried to run from the officer but was tackled on Rodney Street after a short foot chase. Police recovered all the stolen merchandise.
Charges Filed Against Suspect
According to Chief Ackermann, Hand was charged with:

Fourth-degree shoplifting

Third-degree resisting arrest

Third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance (clozapine)
He was processed at Glen Rock Police Headquarters before being taken to the Bergen County Jail, pending a court appearance in Hackensack.

Police credited the quick response of local citizens who helped direct Officer Magro to the suspect.
