Glen Rock NJ, a Glen Rock Democratic councilwoman  faced criticism following a poor taste Instagram post on her personal page that made light of anti-abortion viewpoints by referencing Easter and Easter eggs.

Following her sharing of a meme on social media that mocked Easter with references to drag and abortion, Glen Rock Borough Councilwoman Paula Gilligan, a local New Jersey Democrat, is under pressure to resign from her post. The meme, which stated, “Easter eggs are aborted chicken babies that are painted in drag for small children to worship,” has sparked controversy and led to calls for Gilligan’s resignation.

In response to the backlash, Councilwoman Paula Gilligan addressed her post in a message on the town website, while the mayor and other council members issued apologies in a separate post.

A Statement from Mayor Morieko & Members of the Council

To our Glen Rock neighbors and residents:

We have been made aware of a post that appeared on one of our Council Member’s personal Instagram stories. This post invoked Easter, the holiest day of the year in the Christian calendar, in a point about two issues that have nothing to do with Easter.  As Mayor and members of the Borough Council, we want to apologize to everyone who was offended by this post.

We all feel very strongly that everyone’s religious beliefs and traditions must be treated with respect. They should not be the subject of jokes or inflammatory social media posts.  That is even more true when the social media post is made by an elected official, because we are here to represent and support all Glen Rockers of all religious beliefs and backgrounds.  We understand how important Easter and the symbols of Easter are to the many Glen Rockers who celebrate.

As we have stated on many occasions before, we believe strongly that Glen Rock should be an inclusive community that celebrates and honors everyone’s religious beliefs and traditions.  This includes Christianity as well as all of the other religions represented in town.  We call on all Glen Rockers to support and respect each other, and as your elected officials, we continue to strive to be examples of that support and respect.

Gilligan’s message on the town website attempted to  clarify that her personal Instagram post did not reflect the official views of the Mayor and Council, expressing regret to those who found it disrespectful to their holiday traditions.

A Statement from Council Member Gilligan

It has come to my attention that there are constituents in Glen Rock that have concerns with a meme on my personal Instagram story. The meme takes aim at the absurdity of “personhood” laws. Currently 40 bills with personhood language have been proposed in 16 states. Personhood language refers to legal language that would codify the dangerous notion that from the moment of fertilization, an egg should be legally recognized as a person with full constitutional rights. This legislation supports an extremist political position that I disagree with. It is my personal opinion that people have the right to control their bodies and their lives.
My personal Instagram does not constitute the official views, opinions or beliefs of the Mayor and Council of the Borough of Glen Rock. To those who feel it mocks your holiday traditions, that was not my intention.  Wishing all who celebrate a peaceful, joyous holiday.
Paula Gilligan

  2. This is what happens when you have a Borough Council composed of the equivalent of the cast of The View.

Immanuel Kant would have loved her “I’m sorry I got caught” apology.

Not to worry, the usual uncounted absentee and mail-in votes will save them. It always seems to………..

    1. Post of the day!

  3. Ridgewood has a council person who I believe is the administrator of a group page and is apparently censoring people from commenting on topics that don’t fit her narrative. This should not even be allowed when you are in municipal government, you should not be the admin of a group page.

    1. Anyone who engages in censorship of any kind, big or small, is a coward who knows their positions cannot stand up to scrutiny.

      1. You mean like the dude who runs this blog? :))))

  4. “This legislation supports an extremist political position that I disagree with.”

A lot of people would consider ripping an unborn child from the womb a bit more extreme than calling it a person, far fewer than in the past, of course, but nevertheless …

One point of contention with the Council’s statement, however:

“… we believe strongly that Glen Rock should be an inclusive community that celebrates and honors everyone’s religious beliefs and traditions.”

Celebrating and honoring the beliefs and traditions of people who are diametrically opposed to yours and who wish to eliminate them in the most humiliating ways possible is what allows situations like this to grow and become entrenched, dummies.

    1. How could she miss that Sunday is a most important day: International Transgender Day of Visibility???

Or will they pass a resolution on that, too?

  5. Liberal Doctrine:

    Antisemitism = BAD

    Anti-Christianity = Good

    1. So? Because liberals are at heart a bunch of decadent weaklings, they only thing they really admire is strength, which is why they’re constantly looking under their metaphorical beds for tyrants; they secretly crave a good dictatorship that would discipline them like the bad children they are. If Christians had half the strength as Jews, it wouldn’t be a problem. But Christians are even more contemptible than liberals, and that’s why they get piled on. Don’t like it? Onward Christian solider.

      1. This gobbledeguck made no sense to me whatsoever.

  6. Disgusting post made by her. Shaking my head

  7. She needs to go

  8. Amazing that certain people have a need to advertise what they are thinking. I am doing same but hoping to make less of an ass of myself.

    1. As they say “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.”

  9. Elected officials in any town (or village) need to be held to a higher standard and act and behave the the utmost professionalism. This is not a fun fact but rather the reality. If people engage on a public page on social media, then they are setting themselves up for scrutiny. As an elected official, you are supposed to represent your constituents and your personal opinion is not always warranted. This will hurt this councilperson and even if she doesn’t not resign, she probably would not be voted in again. Mayors and counci persons should be reminded that their actions should be ethical and think before you speak (or type).

  10. This f……ing idiot should resign immediately! Her statement after the fact is crocodile tears. She new her comments would cause controversy! This democratic “******” should be gone!

  11. We are stuck with the worst rotten eggs here in Ridgewood. Such a sad state of affairs as we deal with a Mayor and Council who lie to the public in the minds of many who live here. This comment, while totally uncool and dumb, it just that. If this person has done anything of merit, then maybe a public apology addressed to the public is in order. If it were as easy to get rid of council persons because of dumb things they have said, Like the mayor and majority block, then we would in a much better state of affairs than we are today.

  12. If this slur was against ANY GROUP OTHER THAN CHRISTIANS there would be hellfire for months.

    1. What is the slur? Be specific.

      1. I’m pretty sure you are not an idiot, but just a hateful troll.

But I’ve been known to be wrong from time to time, so I will not rule out that you are an idiot.

        1. OK, explain to the idiot what the slur is?

Because “Easter eggs are aborted chicken babies dressed in drag for small children to worship” seems to this idiot to contain no slurs.
