Glen Rock NJ, as tax season hits its peak, a Glen Rock resident has reported being the victim of identity theft involving a fraudulent tax return, according to local police.

The resident discovered the fraud last Wednesday after receiving a notice by U.S. mail from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The notice revealed that someone had filed a tax return using their personal information.

According to the Glen Rock Police Department, the victim is currently working with both the IRS and their accountant to resolve the situation. No further details about the suspect or financial losses were released.

Tax Season Fraud on the Rise

With the April 15 tax filing deadline just around the corner, local law enforcement warns that this kind of scam is especially common this time of year.

Police are reminding residents to be cautious of scams and impersonators, emphasizing that the IRS will never initiate contact by phone, text, or email.

“Their initial contact with the taxpayer will be via U.S. mail,” police stated. “The IRS does not initiate investigations by phone or text.”

How to Protect Yourself From Tax Identity Theft

Tax identity theft typically occurs when a scammer uses someone’s personal information, like a Social Security number, to file a return and claim a fraudulent refund. To stay protected:

  • File early to reduce the chance of someone else filing in your name.

  • Use secure internet connections when accessing tax software.

  • Watch for warning signs, such as IRS mail about a tax return you didn’t file.

  • Never share personal or financial information over phone calls or emails claiming to be from the IRS.

If you suspect you’ve been targeted, report the incident to the IRS and local police immediately.

Need More Time?

If you’re not ready to file by April 15, you can request a six-month extension through the IRS website. However, note that this does not extend the deadline to pay any taxes owed.

Stay alert and file securely to avoid becoming a victim of tax-related fraud.
