Glen Rock NJ,  a series of scam attempts targeting Glen Rock residents last month resulted in nearly $49,000 in potential losses, with two cases proving successful, according to local police.

Over a five-day period in April, three separate residents reported various fraud schemes, ranging from identity theft to impersonation of federal agents. Authorities are urging the public to stay alert.

April 14: Credit Card Fraud Hits Local Resident

On April 14, a Glen Rock resident reported that an unauthorized store credit card was opened in her name. In addition, scammers made fraudulent purchases totaling $5,500 on her Macy’s and J.C. Penney credit cards.

The Glen Rock Detective Bureau is actively investigating the case.

April 15: FTC Impersonator Attempts $30K Scam

Just one day later, another resident received a phone call from a scammer posing as a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) official, claiming that the victim’s bank account had been hacked. The caller instructed the resident to transfer $30,000 to a digital wallet to “protect” the funds.

Fortunately, the resident recognized the scam and contacted Glen Rock Police before any money was lost.

“We would like to remind residents to remain vigilant about these types of unsolicited phone call scams,” said Glen Rock Police.

April 18: Business Account Breach and SIM-Swapping Attempt

A Glen Rock business owner contacted police after discovering that $7,500 was fraudulently withdrawn from their business account. An additional $6,000 withdrawal attempt was unsuccessful.

The same victim reported an attempt to transfer their Verizon phone numbers to another carrier, a red flag commonly associated with SIM-swapping scams designed to bypass two-factor authentication.

The Detective Bureau is continuing to investigate this case.
