Westwood NJ, the days of manually tracking potholes and faded lane markers are over in Westwood, New Jersey! Mayor Ray Arroyo has announced that the borough is integrating cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to completely overhaul how it assesses and plans for road repairs and improvements.

This move aims to make maintenance smarter, faster, and more cost-effective for taxpayers.
How Westwood’s AI Road Assessment Works
Westwood is partnering with Vitalytics, an Edison, NJ-based software company, to use a data collection product that streamlines road repair assessments. The technology is surprisingly straightforward:
- The Scanner: An ordinary iPhone, equipped with the Vitalytics proprietary app, is mounted on the dashboard of the DPW Superintendent Rick Woods’ vehicle.
- The Data Collection: As the vehicle drives, the phone records the street scene and, simultaneously, AI algorithms analyze the condition of everything in its path, including:
- Asphalt condition (cracks, potholes)
- Striping (lane markers)
- Catch Basins and Manhole Covers
- Street Signs
The AI “Heat Map” and Budgeting Power
The key output of this system is an objective, comprehensive “heat map” that grades every surface and item from 1 (worst) to 10 (best).
Mayor Arroyo explained that this objective scoring helps the borough prioritize its planning, scope of work, and projected capital improvement costs over subsequent budget cycles.
“The integration of this 21st century technology into our road program enhances administrative efficiencies,” Arroyo stated. Instead of spending time manually compiling data, the system automatically creates a “living, comprehensive, digital database” that is updated as soon as repairs are completed and the camera captures the upgraded condition.
The system can even automatically generate work orders for common maintenance tasks like fixing potholes or removing stickers from Stop signs.
By making planning smarter, not harder, Westwood is demonstrating how municipalities can leverage AI to provide better services and save time and money for the community.

Hey, someone should let lazy fat-ass Tedesco, and his crack DPW team know about this. Bergen County roads suck, and even when resurfaced, suck again in a couple of years. His roads are littered with manhole depressions, and maybe this will help to address them. They still need to get their asses out and into repair mode, but it will be a beginning.
