RIDGEWOOD, NJ | October 17, 2025 – Students at Ridgewood High School (RHS) received an unforgettable history lesson today when Governor Phil Murphy made a surprise visit to the school. The Governor sat in with students during Mr. Yannone’s American History and Literature class, focusing on New Jersey’s profound role in the nation’s founding.

The visit comes as New Jersey ramps up preparations for the upcoming America 250 celebration, the Semiquincentennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Embracing the Revolutionary Past

Governor Murphy’s visit to the Bergen County high school highlighted the importance of engaging today’s students with the state’s rich historical legacy. New Jersey, after all, was the “Crossroads of the American Revolution,” hosting more battles and skirmishes than any other colony.

Following his time in the classroom, the Governor issued a statement underscoring the purpose of his visit:

“As we approach our nation’s 250th anniversary, we are proud to see New Jersey schools honoring and embracing our rich revolutionary history.”

The unannounced nature of the visit provided students with a unique, real-world perspective on their curriculum, connecting the historical documents they study in Mr. Yannone’s class to the state’s current leadership.

Why History Matters Now

The Governor’s focus on the 250th anniversary signals the administration’s commitment to civic education and the revitalization of historic sites across the state, ensuring New Jersey is prepared to welcome visitors from around the globe for the 2026 milestone.

By emphasizing how schools like Ridgewood High are integrating this foundational history, Governor Murphy reinforces the state’s vision: that New Jersey’s past greatness inspires the next generation of informed citizens and future leaders. The state’s history is not just a subject, but a crucial element of New Jersey’s identity and future success.
