Trenton NJ, on a recent episode of Ask Governor Murphy on News12 New Jersey, the governor made clear where his priorities lie when pressed about Republican legislation that would have delivered real relief from soaring energy costs.

The legislation, S-4398, introduced by Senators Latham Tiver (R-8) and Joe Pennacchio (R-26), would have suspended the sales and use tax, as well as the Societal Benefits Charge (SBC) on electric bills during peak summer months when energy costs were at their highest.

Senator Tiver described the SBC as a “slush fund for the state,” and said the bill “would provide some meaningful reprieve to ratepayers who’ve been unfairly taxed for programs that do not directly benefit them.”

Instead of supporting relief for working families, Governor Murphy dismissed the plan—arguing that taxes are more important to fund the bureaucracy at the Board of Public Utilities than reducing costs for New Jersey families.

In addition to dismissing the Tiver/Pennacchio plan, Democrats have ignored several other proposals from Senate Republicans which would have lowered costs for ratepayers:

  • Senators Anthony M. Bucco (R-25) and Latham Tiver introduced the “Energy Security and Affordability Act,” to protect consumers from high energy bills and ensure a balanced energy future for New Jersey.
  • Senator Carmen Amato (R-9) called for the energy sales tax windfall to be returned to New Jersey ratepayers.
  • Senator Tiver also proposed S-4610 and S-4611 to prohibit state agencies from adopting rules and regulations that attack consumer choice by banning gas or diesel powered automobiles and appliances.
  • Senator Michael Testa (R-1) also introduced legislation to abolish the Board of Public Utilities—arguing that the agency has abandoned its duty to protect New Jersey consumers.

  1. Tax & Spend. Old school democrat politics.

  2. Windmill Sherrill is even worse!
Funny how wealthy politicians aren’t impacted by their policies that take money out of everyday voter pockets

  3. 2.5 mths to go for the worst governor on the planet. Though if Sherrill wins it will be another 4 yrs plus 2.5 mths!
