It sounds like something out of a comedy, but the incident was a real-life scare that brought evening commuter traffic to a standstill. On Thursday evening, 10/30/2025, a rental vehicle driver in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey, followed their GPS directions so precisely that they ended up driving directly onto the active NJ Transit railroad tracks near the Hollywood Avenue rail crossing.

The driver, along with a passenger, were uninjured but undoubtedly felt a surge of embarrassment after the dramatic navigational error. This incident serves as a stark reminder that technology, while incredibly helpful, is no substitute for human judgment—especially when crossing a busy railway.

The Details: What Happened on the Tracks?

According to the Ho-Ho-Kus Police Department, the rental car came to rest directly on the tracks. The immediate response involved both Ho-Ho-Kus PD and NJ Transit Police officers working to secure the area and handle the retrieval.

  • The Cause: The driver reportedly followed the GPS directions too literally, leading the vehicle off the road and onto the rails.
  • The Rescue: A hydraulic lift tow truck was required to carefully remove the car from its precarious position without damaging the tracks or the vehicle further.
  • The Aftermath: NJ Transit services were significantly slowed in the area until the tracks were cleared and the Maintenance of Way Division completed a thorough safety inspection.

While this disruption caused commuter delays, the most important outcome is that neither the driver nor the passenger was hurt.

The Lesson: Don’t Let Tech Turn Off Your Brain

This Ho-Ho-Kus incident is a classic example of “GPS over-reliance”—a phenomenon where drivers suspend their common sense in favor of digital instructions.

We’ve all heard stories about drivers ending up in lakes, empty fields, or, in this case, on train tracks, because a computer voice told them to turn. Modern navigation technology is fantastic for efficiency, but it cannot always account for current conditions, construction, or, most critically, physical safety barriers like railway lines.

Always remember to:

  1. Look for signage: Active railway crossings have clear warning signs, lights, and gates.
  2. Verify the route: If a road looks questionable, trust your instincts before blindly trusting the screen.
  3. Prioritize safety: No GPS route is worth risking a collision with a train.

If you were affected by the delays, thank the swift action of the Ho-Ho-Kus Police Department and NJ Transit Police for resolving the issue quickly and safely.

  1. The truth is, some people are simply morons. It makes you wonder how they survived long enough to get a driver’s license. Unbelievable.

    1. Does the driver test include anything about verifying what your GPS tells you before you follow it blindly?

Are there photos so you can tell the difference between RR tracks and a paved road surface.
