New York NY, the long-awaited transformation of Manhattan’s outdated Midtown Bus Terminal is officially underway. New York Governor Kathy Hochul, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey broke ground on the Dyer Avenue deck-overs, marking the first phase of a $10 billion project that will redefine the future of regional transportation and urban space.

🌿 Green Space & Infrastructure: A New Era for Midtown

This first stage of construction will not only support the staging of buses during redevelopment but also pave the way for 3.5 acres of publicly accessible green space once the new terminal is complete. The plan represents a major step toward sustainable infrastructure and commuter comfort.

“A new Midtown Bus Terminal will breathe new life into the neighborhood and deliver a better experience for millions of riders,” said Governor Kathy Hochul.

“It’s about modernization, improved transit, and thousands of good-paying union jobs,” added Governor Phil Murphy.

🚌 What’s Coming: A Modern, Net-Zero Transit Hub

The current 75-year-old terminal will be replaced with a state-of-the-art, net-zero emissions facility featuring:

  • A multi-story main terminal

  • A separate storage and staging building

  • Direct ramp access to the Lincoln Tunnel

  • A central entrance, public open space, and outward-facing retail

  • Enhanced environmental features and reduced street-level bus congestion

The Dyer Avenue deck-overs are being built over the Lincoln Tunnel Expressway between West 37th and West 39th streets and will serve both construction needs and future park space.

💼 Economic Boost: 6,000 Union Jobs & Local Retail

Officials estimate the terminal revamp will generate over 6,000 union construction jobs, fueling the local economy and benefiting communities on both sides of the Hudson. Retail options and modern transit design will ensure the facility benefits both commuters and nearby residents.

“This isn’t just a terminal—it’s a gateway, a community asset, and a regional investment,” said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole.

🔌 Built for the Future: All-Electric & Community-Inspired

The new terminal will accommodate all-electric bus fleets, include high-tech operational systems, and eliminate the need for new private property acquisition. Extensive community engagement shaped the final plan, including input from NYC, NJ, local boards, and transit advocates.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand emphasized the project’s long-term impact:

“This is a once-in-a-generation upgrade. It means more green space, fewer delays, and a better experience for hundreds of thousands of daily commuters.”

🛠️ What’s Next?

The project will proceed in phases, beginning with the deck-overs and then the storage/staging facility, which can operate temporarily while the existing terminal is demolished and rebuilt. Actual procurement is already underway.
