Washington DC, the federal government has officially implemented two significant renaming decisions outlined during President Trump’s administration. The changes, announced by the Interior Department, include renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and restoring the name Mount McKinley to Alaska’s highest peak, reversing its previous designation as Denali.

Official Name Changes Take Effect

In a recent press release, the Interior Department confirmed that the U.S. Board on Geographic Names is working to update these names in the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). These changes are now considered “effective immediately for federal use.”

  • Gulf of America: The iconic Gulf of Mexico will now bear a new name reflecting a national identity shift.
  • Mount McKinley: Alaska’s tallest mountain reverts to honoring former President William McKinley, overturning the 2015 decision to call it Denali, a name rooted in Indigenous heritage.

The Debate Around Mount McKinley and Denali

The name of the 20,310-foot peak has been a contentious issue for decades.

  • In 2015, the Obama administration officially changed the name to Denali, honoring the original name used by local Native Alaskan communities.
  • Historical Context: The name “Mount McKinley” originated in 1897, when a gold prospector used it in reference to then-presidential candidate William McKinley. The name gained popularity after McKinley’s assassination in 1901, despite the president never having visited Alaska.

This recent decision restores the mountain’s historical name while reigniting conversations about cultural and historical significance tied to geographic features.

Implications for Federal Maps and Usage

The updates to the GNIS mean federal maps, documents, and systems will now reflect these changes. The process is being expedited to ensure consistency across government use.

Public Reaction and Historical Significance

These renaming decisions highlight the evolving relationship between cultural heritage, historical preservation, and national identity. The Gulf of America’s rebranding introduces a patriotic element to a significant geographic feature, while the restoration of Mount McKinley’s name reflects a nod to historical precedence.

As the U.S. adapts these updates, discussions about geographic names and their meaning will likely continue to shape public and political discourse.

  1. Still the Gulf of Mexico to me. There are more important things in this world to be concerned about than renaming bodies of water or land. What names are we going to change next? Are we going to “whitewash” everything?

    1. “There are more important things in this world” is that why you libs changed the name to begin with?

    2. Democrats and Communists white washed everything during the 2020 summer of love BLM Antifa riots. That when the cancel culture started. Right after your boy George Flyodd overdosed on Fentanyl

    3. I’d say the real white washing of our culture or in our country in general started after the Traveon Martin and Ferguson riots back in 2013 2014. This was about the turning point socially as a country and the beginning on Obama’s second term when we started to experience this whole anti cop rhetoric being advanced thru a corporate lens. It started with BLM hands up dont shoot and kneeling at the football games. these slogans made its way to the political and cultural landscape we live in today. From Colin Kapernick, LeFlop James, to the Don Lemons and Joy Reeds. This anti-american hateful dialogue was being promoted and paid for by you guess it far left, soros, and clintons. Obama was right where he wanted to be. Finally in a position to gain leverage on his plan all along to divide american people based on race, gender, and ideology. covid set the stage for a combustible mixture of ignorance and power and then to top it off, as we were all locked down and masked up, george floyd died. He had 3X the deadly limit of fentanyl in his system. The media covered up cause of death autopsy, but with the footage it was enough to stow fear into the public and create choas. They banned books, Aunt Jemima and doctor Suess, they topple statues, renamed buildings. It started with “The protests are mostly peaceful” regurgitated by the social influencers on social media and brought the center of discussion for approval. After Floyd, was guys like Rashard Brooks, Jacob Blake, getting martyred in the media white gold chests and royal funerals. The families were given millions of dollars for they own being a criminal, the blm riots antifa, burning down cities, looting, violent protests, chop zone in Seattle summer of love. All the democratic governors denied Trumps request to bring in Army National Guard cause they wanted as much destrution as possible to hurt his relection chance. Media didnt give Trump a fair shake, they were villians out to get him on covid social distancing bs mask debate cia propaganda, then now you fast track to 2024 after going thru everything in the last 5 years, the democrats have really destroyed their image in the last 4 years by rigging and supporting their establishment candidates. hillary Cinton, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris? eww we should trust them to run our country? From Day 1 when Joey B signed executive orders to Reverse remain in Mexico policy, halt construction of the southern border wall, halt the contruction and completion of the Key stone Pipeline, and cut drilling, fund the war in Ukraine and Russia, and the disastrious pull out from Afgansitan, + much more. Its quite simple, the left is fractured as a party and they need all the help that they can get. Thats one of the many reasons why they wanted illegal immigration in the first place. They were doing everything they could to find them a pathway to citezenship. By anymeans at our expense. They have no momentum now or for the forseable future. They almost got him with crooks, but hes the most protected and blessed man on earth, so lets keep supporting the greatest President to ever live. Lets MAke American Great Again. This is in honor of my great uncle who jumped on d-day and was executed 7 days later in a small French village. This is to his brothers who also served in the Army and Navy and to my other great uncles who served in the Pacific and my grandmother who was alos in the Navy during the war. And to all those who faught and died in all these wars and to the families who lost loved ones, never forget where you come from, especially when life hit you with adversity.

  4. Taxpayer dollars ahahahahahah lmao. were 35 trillion in debt – mostly from social welfare programs, world wars, and open borders.

    1. In debt to WHOM? And why would a sovereign nation, capable of printing its own money, be in debt to anyone ever?

      1. wow.

don’t speak of topics of which you know nothing.

        it exposes your ignorance

        1. You radiate bliss.

      2. ever since we left the gold standard in 1971, the money changers have grown our national debt exponentially. Print and spend with no return on investment and incredible waste. its the federal reserve. they and our own govt who are responsible. who are we in debt to is a great question. Id say the federal reserve is in debt to the American people and all the other countries in the world. one of the biggest scams in us history. a group of bankers who run the worlds economy and our congress printing negotiating to plunder our economy.

        1. If an institution has sway over the lifeblood of the American economy, but that institution cannot be investigated, audited, or subject to the will of the American people in any way, the American government is subservient to that institution. It’s pretty simple calculus that even the genius above you can understand.

          1. just the opposite , politicians need to shut up and do what your told they work for us, and ill audit your a$$ off at my leisure

            1. In 1913 Congress gave an independent central bank deceptively named the Federal Reserve a monopoly over issuing America’s money. Oh the money changers control alot more than just the money. I agree that our federal government is subservient to the federal reserve. The fed has much more influence.

  5. “If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations which grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered” -Thomas Jefferson
