Hackensack, NJ – July 23, 2025 – The City of Hackensack Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 135 Main Street after receiving a report from the Hackensack Police Department at 1:51 PM.
Third Platoon firefighters, led by Acting Deputy Chief Jose Portacio, arrived on the scene and discovered a working fire on the top floor and roof of a two-story commercial building housing a hair salon, restaurant, and business offices.
Fire crews deployed multiple hose lines and performed extensive overhaul operations on the second floor and roof to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.
🔥 Fire Contained, No Spread to Nearby Buildings
Thanks to the quick and coordinated response of on-duty Hackensack firefighters, recall members, and mutual aid partners, the fire was contained to the building of origin with no extension to surrounding exposure buildings.
There was an initial report of a victim trapped on the roof, but that individual was able to self-evacuate without assistance.
đźš‘ Injuries Reported, But No Serious Harm

One firefighter sustained a hand injury and was transported for medical care.

One worker on-site was evaluated by BLS (Basic Life Support) and released without further treatment.
The fire escalated to a 3rd Alarm, drawing additional support from neighboring fire departments.
🔍 Cause of the Fire Under Investigation
The Hackensack Fire Prevention Bureau is currently investigating the cause of the fire, but officials say it is not considered suspicious at this time.
Fire Chief Anthony Riehl was on the scene and commended all firefighters and mutual aid teams for their hard work and dedication in keeping the fire contained and preventing further damage.
