Hackensack NJ, for the first time since 1967, the Johnson Public Library in Hackensack is undergoing a significant, long-awaited renovation. The library, a cornerstone of the community since it first opened its doors in 1901, closed temporarily on November 10th and will remain shuttered until December 1st to complete the initial critical phase of work.
Library Director Tara Cooper emphasized the necessity of the update: “The way we use the library has changed a lot in the last 60 years. We’re really playing catchup. We’re finally making it happen.”
The Details: Modernizing a 120-Year-Old Building
The renovation project focuses heavily on maximizing the utility of the existing space and addressing long-term maintenance needs.
Phase 1: Temporary Closure & Critical Work
The initial three-week closure is dedicated to essential and safe work, including:
- Asbestos Removal: Necessary abatement from the building.
- Demolition: Preparing the lower level for its new configuration.
Phase 2: The Lower Level Transformation
Once demolition is complete, the lower level will be closed until the final renovation finishes in April. This floor, which historically housed state documents and periodicals, will be completely transformed into modern, functional spaces:
- Dedicated Teen Area: A crucial new space designed specifically for local teens, allowing them to socialize and study without disturbing other patrons. This is particularly important since the library is just two blocks from Hackensack Middle School and the local YMCA has closed.
- Study Rooms: Private spaces available for public use, perfect for quiet studying, Zoom job interviews, or private appointments.
- Public Conference Room: A space available for the community to reserve and use.
- Social Work Resources: The new private study rooms will be a “game changer,” allowing social work interns to confidentially meet with residents to connect them with essential resources and benefits.
Where to Find Services During Renovation
While the building is closed until December 1st, and the lower level remains closed until April, library patrons should note:
- The lower-level auditorium is not part of the renovation and will remain accessible.
- The library’s full collections will remain available throughout the renovation period.
- Some library programs may be subject to cancellation due to temporary space constraints.
This renovation marks a major step forward for the Hackensack community, ensuring the Johnson Public Library remains a relevant, safe, and productive space for the next 60 years and beyond.
