Hackensack NJ, With the May 13 municipal election approaching, Mayor John Labrosse’s team has a new candidate after a slate member withdrew to avoid a potential conflict of interest.

Richard Garcia, a Democrat working for the Bergen County Clerk’s Office, will replace Marco Howington, a real estate development consultant, on Labrosse’s ticket.

Richard Garcia Joins Labrosse Team

Mayor Labrosse expressed confidence in Garcia, stating:

“After interviewing several possible candidates, we are very proud to welcome Richard to our team. Richard shares our commitment to open, honest government that puts taxpayers first and to finishing the job of making Hackensack one of New Jersey’s finest communities.”

Garcia, if elected, aims to expand recreation programs and affordable housing initiatives in Hackensack.

“I am very pleased to have this opportunity to serve the people of our great city as a member of the Labrosse Team,” Garcia said.

Hackensack’s Election and Key Candidates

The Hackensack City Council election determines all five seats every four years. Labrosse’s team includes:

  • Mayor John Labrosse – First elected in 2009, serving as mayor since 2013
  • Deputy Mayor Kathy Canestrino – A retired aerospace engineer, serving since 2013
  • Lance Powell – Former Board of Education candidate
  • Marlene Somerville – Former Board of Education candidate
  • Richard Garcia – New candidate replacing Marco Howington

Labrosse’s ticket will face off against Hackensack Unites, a slate featuring:

  • Caseen Gaines
  • Agatha Toomey
  • Roberto Diaz
  • Philip Carroll
  • Sonya Clark-Collins

Why Marco Howington Withdrew

Howington withdrew from the race after learning about a new state law that took effect late last year. The law prohibits individuals with financial interests in the cannabis industry from holding public office. While Howington has a limited financial interest in cannabis, he stepped aside to comply with the regulation.

Despite his withdrawal, Howington remains a strong supporter of the Labrosse team, stating:

“I am 100 percent behind the Labrosse Team and will continue to do everything I can to reelect this administration to keep our city moving forward. I am proud to be part of the city’s revitalization.”

Upcoming Election Details

The deadline for council candidates to submit their petitions of nomination and acceptance is February 27. Petitions are available at the Hackensack City Clerk’s Office.

As Hackensack prepares for a competitive election season, voters will decide on the leadership shaping the city’s future.
