Hackensack NJ, two of New Jersey’s largest healthcare organizations, Hackensack Meridian Health and Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield, have reached a multi-year contract agreement, resolving a dispute that could have disrupted healthcare access for millions of residents.
The deal, finalized on Monday, comes just two months before an estimated 3 million New Jerseyans would have lost in-network access to Hackensack Meridian’s 18 hospitals, including Hackensack University Medical Center.
Reimbursement Dispute Resolved
At the heart of the negotiations were reimbursement rates—a common issue in provider-insurer contracts. Hackensack Meridian argued that higher payments were necessary to support advancements in technology and infrastructure, while Horizon maintained that previous increases were fair and sufficient.
Despite the initial deadlock, both sides expressed satisfaction with the final agreement.
-
Hackensack Meridian CEO Robert Garrett shared that he was “thrilled” with the resolution.
-
Horizon CEO Gary St. Hilaire emphasized the importance of collaboration in prioritizing patient care.
What This Means for Patients
The agreement ensures uninterrupted healthcare coverage for millions of Horizon policyholders, preserving their access to Hackensack Meridian’s expansive hospital network, which includes major medical centers like:
✅ Hackensack University Medical Center
✅ Jersey Shore Medical Center (Neptune, NJ)
With Hackensack Meridian as the largest hospital system in the state and Horizon BCBS as New Jersey’s leading health insurer, this agreement represents a major win for patients and the healthcare industry alike.
