Hackensack NJ, the Hackensack Police Department is responding decisively to a growing trend of unauthorized “park takeover” events promoted on social media, following two incidents at Carver Park in early June.

On Monday, June 2, more than 300 people gathered at the park for an unsanctioned basketball tournament that had been widely advertised online. Despite officers informing attendees that the event lacked the necessary permits, crowds returned minutes after being dispersed, creating public safety concerns similar to those seen in other towns across New Jersey.

“These pop-up events often escalate into safety issues, including fights and disorderly conduct,” said Police Chief Michael Antista. “Our priority is to keep our parks and neighborhoods safe for all residents, especially children and families.”

Police responded again on Wednesday, June 4, after learning that the same promoter was attempting to organize another unauthorized event. Originally advertised for Votee Park in Teaneck, the promoter changed the location back to Carver Park at the last minute. Officers intervened around 5 p.m. and successfully dispersed the group without incident.

Chief Antista emphasized the importance of securing proper permits for any organized event in public parks. “We encourage the use of our parks for recreational and community activities,” he said. “But it must be done in a way that is safe, structured, and approved through the city’s permitting process.”

Officials continue efforts to contact the event promoter, who has reportedly been involved in similar unauthorized events in other North Jersey towns.

The Bottom Line: The Hackensack Police Department remains vigilant and proactive in addressing unpermitted gatherings. Officers are committed to protecting public spaces and ensuring they remain safe for all residents to enjoy.
