Hackensack Police Arrest Bergenfield Man on Weapons Charges After Tire Slashing Incident

HACKENSACK, NJ — The Hackensack Police Department has announced the arrest of Simeon Barnes, 48, of Bergenfield, following a violent confrontation that led to several weapons charges.

According to police, the incident unfolded on August 12, 2025, when Officer Wanda Rivera responded to a call near Linden Street and Anderson Street about a dispute involving a man who allegedly punctured the tires of a vehicle. While speaking with the complainant, the suspect — identified as Barnes — was spotted again by the victim. A confrontation followed, and both men ran into an alleyway.

Struggle with Police and Firearm Discovery

Officer Rivera attempted to stop Barnes, who allegedly ignored commands, sparking a physical struggle. During the altercation, Barnes reached into his waistband and discarded a loaded Glock handgun with an extended magazine, police said.

Detective DeBonis and Sergeant Seretis arrived shortly after, assisting Officer Rivera in subduing Barnes, who was placed under arrest without further incident.

Charges Filed Against Simeon Barnes

Barnes now faces multiple charges, including:

Obstruction (4th degree)

Possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose (2nd degree)

Possession of a firearm without a permit (2nd degree)

Hindering apprehension (3rd degree)

Possession of hollow-point bullets (4th degree)

Possession of a large-capacity magazine (4th degree)

Barnes was processed and transported to the Bergen County Jail on a complaint warrant.

Authorities stressed that these charges are accusations, and Barnes is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
