
Violence Erupts Near Essex Street: 22-Year-Old Man Shot at Hackensack Apartment Complex

HACKENSACK, NJ — A violent shooting in the heart of Hackensack has left a 22-year-old man hospitalized and local authorities searching for answers. The incident, which occurred on the evening of February 18, 2026, sparked a massive police presence near one of the city’s busiest commercial corridors.
Shooting at Summit Manor Apartments
The gunfire broke out just after 8:00 p.m. at the Summit Manor Apartment complex, located on Berkshire Place near the intersection of Arcadia and Essex Street.
According to Jeff Angermeyer, Chief of Detectives for the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, the unidentified victim suffered a gunshot wound to the face. He was immediately rushed to the nearby Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC), where officials state he is currently “expected to survive.”
Police Activity and Public Safety Alerts
At approximately 8:45 p.m., the Hackensack Police Department issued an urgent social media alert advising the public to avoid the area surrounding Essex Street and Arcadia due to an “active police investigation.”
The scene is situated in a high-traffic area, just down the road from the landmark Chit Chat Diner and within blocks of the regional medical center.
