Ridgewood NJ, on the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Departed Soles Brewing Company in Jersey City has launched its annual Red Bandana American-style pilsner to honor Welles Crowther, the “Man in the Red Bandana,” who heroically saved at least 10 lives during the World Trade Center tragedy. This marks the fifth year the brewery has released this special beer, brewed in collaboration with Crowther’s family, with proceeds benefiting the Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust and other 9/11 victim support initiatives. Discover how this heartfelt tribute keeps Crowther’s legacy alive and supports those affected by 9/11 here.

The Man in the Red Bandana: Welles Crowther’s Story

Welles Crowther, a 24-year-old from Upper Nyack, New York, was working as a rookie equities trader on the 104th floor of the South Tower on September 11, 2001. When the plane struck, Crowther sprang into action, using his red bandana to shield himself from smoke as he made multiple trips up and down the stairwells, guiding at least 10 people to safety. His courage didn’t stop there—he joined New York City firefighters in a makeshift command center in the South Tower’s lobby, working to free trapped individuals until the building collapsed, claiming his life and those of the firefighters.

Survivors later shared stories of a mysterious figure wearing a red bandana who led them to safety, earning Crowther the title “Man in the Red Bandana.” In 2006, the New York City Fire Department posthumously named him an honorary firefighter, recognizing his extraordinary bravery.

A Beer with Purpose

Departed Soles Brewing Company, led by owner Brian Kulbacki, introduced Red Bandana beer to honor Crowther’s sacrifice and raise funds for 9/11-related causes. This crisp, American-style pilsner is more than a craft beer—it’s a symbol of remembrance and resilience. A portion of the proceeds supports the Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust, which funds scholarships and community initiatives, as well as other organizations aiding 9/11 victims and their families.

Kulbacki, a 2008 Boston College graduate, was inspired by Crowther’s story, which he first heard at their shared alma mater. Crowther, a 1999 Boston College graduate and lacrosse player, left a lasting impact on the campus, where annual charity events are held in his name. “We always said we’ll never forget, and now 24 years later, it feels like sometimes people do forget,” Kulbacki said. “It’s important to always bring the focus back on the survivors, victims, and their families and the struggles they go through.”

Crowther’s Legacy of Service

Raised in Upper Nyack, Welles Crowther followed in his father’s footsteps as a volunteer firefighter at Empire 1 Hook & Ladder Company. His passion for helping others carried into his adult life, culminating in his selfless actions on 9/11. The Red Bandana beer not only celebrates his heroism but also serves as a reminder of the thousands of lives impacted by the tragedy and the ongoing need to support survivors and families.

Why This Matters

As we commemorate 9/11, initiatives like Red Bandana beer keep the stories of heroes like Welles Crowther alive, ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten. By enjoying this craft beer, consumers can contribute to meaningful causes while honoring a legacy of courage and compassion. Departed Soles’ collaboration with Crowther’s family is a powerful example of how communities can come together to make a difference, even decades after the tragedy.
