Ho-Ho-Kus Nj, late Wednesday afternoon on November 12, 2025, the southbound lanes of Route 17 in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ, became the scene of a significant two-vehicle chain reaction crash. The accident, which occurred directly underneath the Hollywood Avenue overpass, severely impacted the evening rush hour commute.
The collision resulted in the injury of one individual and forced the closure of two crucial travel lanes (the left and center), causing southbound traffic to back up for miles across Bergen County.
The Emergency Response
The severity of the incident required a rapid and coordinated response from local emergency services:
- Victim Transport: A Ho-Ho-Kus EMS ambulance was immediately on scene and transported the injured victim to The Valley Hospital for necessary medical treatment.
- Hazmat Cleanup: The impact caused a crash-related fluid spill on the highway. Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department firefighters promptly responded to contain and clean up the fluid to ensure safety and prevent further hazard.
- Police and Towing: Ho-Ho-Kus Police Department officers managed the congested traffic and crash scene investigation while both heavily damaged vehicles were towed away by flatbed trucks.
Emergency crews worked diligently to clear the roadway, but the lane closures during peak travel time created substantial delays for motorists heading south.
Focus on Roadway Safety
This incident serves as a critical reminder for drivers on high-speed roadways like Route 17, especially during busy evening commutes. Chain reaction crashes are often preventable by maintaining safe following distances and reducing speed, particularly near overpasses and merges.

Why worry about it? It’s just a collateral benefit of the cityfication of what used to be a nice suburban place to live.
Like lots of other things, it should be celebrated.
Let’s build a baseball field on Route 17! Because tractor trailers and speeding idiots going north NEVER jackknife and crash into adjacent properties.
And we can have the entrance to the complex 30 yards from the West Saddle River Road exit, sending cars that NEVER speed onto a narrow stretch of road where people will be backed up waiting to pull in.
What could go wrong?
And the sky is falling!
This must have made the passengers furious in those Ambulances from NY state that are used as taxi’s to Brooklyn
Lots of aliments are circadian and just happen to occur at morning rush hour on 17……………….
Oh. I forgot, these days it’s always “rush hour” on 17…….
I guess they’ll want a dedicated lane next……………………..
I’d like the police to issue tickets to those ambulances that are blasting down the road with lights and sirens if they are really taxis. IF a REAL patient coming from up there in NY required medical care they would go to the hospital in suffern.
