East Rutherford NJ, Move over, Hollywood—North Jersey is officially a movie hot spot! Fans and locals in East Rutherford were buzzing this week as their popular ice cream haven, Cake & Cone, was shut down to serve as a filming location for an upcoming Netflix movie starring Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx.

The film, titled “Fight for ’84,” is a powerful sports drama inspired by the true story of the U.S. Olympic boxing team following a tragic 1980 plane crash. Foxx stars as the coach brought in to rebuild the squad and lead them toward the 1984 Olympic Games.

A Step Back in Time: The 1984 Vibe

Owner Arvind Bhandari confirmed the exciting news to NorthJersey.com, noting that the shop was closed until November 1st for the production. The film’s director, Andrés Baiz, and the crew went to great lengths to perfectly capture the early 80s aesthetic:

  • Temporary Transformation: The beloved Cake & Cone was temporarily redesigned into an old-time burger joint to fit the 1984 setting.
  • Vintage Cars: Older-model cars were parked along Leonard Place to complete the vintage street scene, transporting the entire block back in time.

Excited local bystanders gathered on the night of October 30th to catch a glimpse of Jamie Foxx and co-star Malachi Beasley filming scenes outside the now-retro eatery.

North Jersey: The Unofficial Hollywood of the East

Cake & Cone isn’t the only local spot making an appearance! “Fight for ’84” has been filming across Bergen County and beyond, showcasing North Jersey’s versatile locations. Earlier this month, the production shot scenes at the now-closed Passaic High School, a location reportedly recommended by Passaic Mayor Hector Lora himself.

This surge in film activity highlights New Jersey’s growing role as a prime destination for major motion picture productions, bringing economic excitement and star power right to our neighborhoods.

The release date for “Fight for ’84” has not yet been announced, but it’s safe to say Bergen County residents will be watching the credits closely when it hits Netflix!
