Mahwah NJ, a routine “quality of life” detail conducted by the Mahwah Police Department’s Investigative and Patrol Divisions led to the dramatic uncovering of an alleged human trafficking operation this week. The incident resulted in a struggle with officers and the arrest of a Roselle man at a local township hotel.
According to Capt. Michael Blondin, officers became aware of possible prostitution activity in the area and encountered a woman entering a hotel who was subsequently determined to be involved in prostitution.
The Arrest: Drug Possession and a Violent Struggle
The investigation quickly led officers to the vehicle that dropped the woman off. They located the driver, identified as Shahiyd Terry, 32, of Roselle.
The encounter quickly escalated when Terry refused to comply with officers’ commands to step out of the vehicle and show his hands. Capt. Blondin reported that Terry appeared to be reaching into his pockets. When informed he was under arrest, a physical struggle ensued before officers were able to successfully take him into custody.
Following the arrest, a search of Terry and the vehicle yielded alarming evidence: “distribution amounts” of crack cocaine and PCP (Phencyclidine), confirming the suspect’s alleged involvement in narcotics trafficking.
First-Degree Human Trafficking Charges Filed
Once at police headquarters, the gravity of the situation became clear. Investigators determined that Shahiyd Terry was allegedly engaged in the human trafficking of the female party initially taken into custody.
Terry now faces a long list of serious charges, including:
-
First-Degree Human Trafficking (The most severe charge)
-
First-Degree Distributing or Dispensing PCP
-
Third-Degree Distributing or Dispensing Cocaine
-
Fourth-Degree Promoting Prostitution
-
Resisting Arrest
Terry was transported to Bergen County Jail pending a hearing.
