Hundreds Turn Their Back on de Blasio at NYPD Officer’s Funeral

Dec 27, 2014, 11:36 AM ET
By DEAN SCHABNER

Hundreds of police officers turned their backs on a screen showing New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio as he spoke at the funeral of one of two officers killed last week in what has been called an “assassination.”

The funeral at the Christ Tabernacle Church, in the Glendale neighborhood of Queens, was broadcast to thousands of police who gathered outside.

The killing of Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu came amid heightened tensions between the police and the mayor over what some police saw as a lack of support for the force.

The atmosphere was mostly respectful, but there were scattered signs of protest even before the police officers action when the mayor spoke.

  1. NYC has had statesmen-like mayors for many years now, and I’m even including Dinkins. The current guy is an abject failure in leadership, appealing ONLY to his base. I guess it will take one term of this nitwit for New Yorkers to appreciate what qualities they have taken for granted in being the Mayor of NYC.

  2. The only reason he was elected out of the group of weak candidates was the tv commercial featuring his likable black son Dante.

  3. Turning your back on the Mayor ?

    How old are we ?

    1. this is what happens to childish race baiting a-holes like de blasio , 2 cops are now dead

  4. “How old are we ?” Old enough to put our life on the line for you.

  5. Tell us how you really feel, PJ! LOL, #BringOutTheWorst…

Two of their brothers were murdered by someone seemingly unbalanced and possibly motivated by comments made by the Mayor. He has made it clear that he doesn’t like the Police. I think their reaction is highly appropriate. I assume you are a Kool-Aid drinker.

You mean four people have now been murdered by someone seemingly unbalanced…. the people who died in Staten Island and Ferguson were murdered, too.

    4 people were killed
2 people (the police officers) were murdered

Maybe Santa should have brought you a dictionary.

  9. Fergusion Really Declan.

  10. Declan has had a full glass of the Sharpton Kool Aid when he talks about Ferustion. Right #9 “2 people (the police officers) were murdered” executed

  11. so what happened in plain sight on Staten Island wasn’t a murder #9? Maybe Santa should have brought you some corrective eyewear.

    1. so your defending cop killers ? some would suggest that a cop in NYC faces hazardous duty and unfortunately disasterous mistakes can happen, but I must have missed the part were the cops got together sand said they were looking to ill a black man

Your response makes no sense. Either you have replied to the wrong person or you need to make yourself clearer.

  13. Apologies Declan mean #8

  14. No one is defending cop killers, it’s a pure tragedy, but killing an innocent person who repeatedly said he couldn’t breathe is also murder James, are you defending the cop who killed that man on Staten Island ? That was a murder. You can’t differentiate here, sorry. That was equally a tragedy and a guilty man walked free.

    1. there is a HUGE difference , next time you have an emergency dont call the police and find out , as for “Guilty man” so you now know better than the grand jury ?, perhaps if you ever served (it free by the way) you may not rush to judgement , remember this is the same legal system that found OJ innocent

  15. I suggest you wait to see what the autopsy says in detail.
If you are being choked you cannot speak.
Unless the report states asphyxiation as the cause, I’d suspect that being overweight and excitement could cause any one of a number of physical ailments that could kill him.
Let’s not forget, if you don’t want to deal with the police, don’t commit a crime and you won’t be putting yourself in a physical situation.
And if you cannot refrain from committing crimes stop resisting arrest when. Being instructed to do so.
I’d guess that the officers in nyc chose not to used batons, pepper spray or a taser on the man who died, since the infraction was of a low level.
I’d like to heart what the grand jury heard before making an opinion on the cause of deaths

  16. The Staten Island death was clearly not murder. What you had was an absolute giant of a man who refused to go along with the Police Officer’s lawful arrest. He physically resisted, and the Officer had absolutely no alternative but to request backup, and to then bring this man-mountain down. His repeated calls of “I can’t breath” seem odd for if he truly couldn’t breath, he would not be able to say the words. Criminals, and especially the ones who resist arrest, have a tendency to lie. It’s basically what they do. So to take a liars word that he cannot breath is not an easy one to accept. Now completely unbeknownst to the Officers, the man had a serious health condition, and it would appear that this was the major contributing factor in his heart failure while being subdued.

The issue here is not murder. The issue is did the Police Officers use excessive force in subduing the man?

  17. Agree %100 Declan.

  18. Hell yes the officers in question used excessive force, it’s plain for everyone to see. They should be fired, but the unions give them cover for bad behavior. We’re over policed as it is.

  19. #18. The autopsy is done. What autopsy are you waiting for?

“On Aug. 1, a New York City medical examiner determined that the cause of death in the Garner case was “homicide,” specifically the neck compressions from the Pantaleo’s chokehold and “the compression of [Garner’s] chest and prone positioning during physical restraint by police,” according to spokeswoman, Julie Bolcer.”

    1. you left out this part : The autopsy from the medical examiner attributed his death to homicide – meaning death at the hands of another party, not murder, in medical parlance – and stated that he died thanks to “Compression of neck (choke hold), compression of chest and prone positioning during physical restraint by police.” But the autopsy further noted that Garner died thanks to acute and chronic bronchial asthma, obesity, and heart disease

  20. Homicide simply means a death that is not due to natural causes. People seem to have this idea that homicide means murder.

  21. So that justifies the officer’s actions of putting him in an illegal choke hold, because he had asthma, was obese and had heart disease? That sounds like you are just defending the bad behavior here. #18’s post is Union gibberish 101… deflect (“wait for an autopsy” that’s already been completed), discredit the video evidence by saying a a man being choked cannot speak, which obviously isn’t factual given the autopsy showed that the man died due to “the neck compressions from the Pantaleo’s chokehold and the compression of [Garner’s] chest and prone positioning during physical restraint by police.” And then somehow try to justify it further by saying the guy was a criminal. He was selling cigarettes. Rica is a criminal for stealing $500,000 from our Village, but he walks free. This guys resists arrest for selling cigarettes and he dies from a chokehold and police restraint according to the autopsy.

  22. #25 Rica did not resist arrest or have the medical issues Garner had. It’s reasonable to believe that if Garner had not resisted arrest he would be alive today. That is not union gibberish.

  23. So let me get this straight. The cops want to arrest someone for committing an illegal act. and that person refuses to be arrested. That person is also enormous. The cops should just walk away because the arrestable offence was no biggie?

Once a officer places a subject under arrest, there is no further “negotiating “.
If the subject does not comply he is resisting arrest.
Officers may take whatever reasonable actions necessary to make the arrest.
Just because a subject is big, large, tall, or fat does not give him a “pass”.
The chokehold is taught to officers to make the arrest.
Would you prefer they beat him over the head with metal batons and flashlights, which used to be the accepted protocol?
The death is the fault of the deceased, nobody else.

    It did not say asphyxiation.
    Thanks for proving my point.

  26. So you guys continue to promote bad behavior and not question the use of excessive force, end of story? How can we ever fire cops for bad behavior if you keep defending it? Classic “blame the victim” mentality. And turning your back on the Mayor of the City you serve as he gives a Eulogy for a murdered fellow officer is disrespectful to say the least. Turning the funeral into a political statement is shameful behavior by public servants.

Hey genius, the hold is taught in the academy and is NOT illegal.
I am not in a union.
The deceased resisted arrest and it’s his fault that he died.
If he was truly being chocked then he would not be able to speak.
There was a minority woman supervisor there.
    The emts were there..
NONE thought intervention was necessary at the The time.
I’m sure your a keyboard warrior who is a self appointed expert on making arrests.
Having worked a bit years ago in law enforcement, if this happned 30 years ago, he would have gotten his fat ass whooped with nite sticks.
The hold that was used was taught in order to take down subjects without beating them to a pulp as was done years ago.

  28. #30, the NYC mayor rapidly and intentionally elevated to a secular sacrament both undifferentiated police protestation (i.e., unconnected to any local event), and shameless defense of recalcitrant, provocative, and violent responses to legitimately constituted public authority and coercive arresting force. He was rewarded for his efforts in very short order with one of the most easily-expected and impossible-to-misunderstand political statements it is possible for one individual to make that perfectly responds to and crystallizes DiBlasio’s perverse anti-police message: a two-officer cold-blooded assassination. Are ordinary police to now forget what they know about how and why this atrocity came about? THE DOUBLE MURDER WAS AND IS THE PRIMARY POLITICAL STATEMENT IN THIS SCENARIO, #30!!! The funeral is merely part of the aftermath.
