Carlstadt NJ, a quiet Friday afternoon in Carlstadt turned tragic this week as a fast-moving house fire claimed a life and left the community in shock. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office has officially taken the lead on an investigation into the blaze that erupted at a two-family residence on January 16, 2026.

The fire, which broke out at 417 3rd St., drew a massive response from local emergency services and required a second-alarm elevation to bring the flames under control.

According to borough fire officials, the alarm was first triggered at approximately 4:00 PM. Within minutes, the Carlstadt Fire Department arrived to find heavy smoke and fire emanating from the second floor of the home.

Rapid Escalation: Recognizing the severity of the conditions and the risk to the surrounding neighborhood, the Incident Commander quickly called for a second alarm, bringing in additional resources and manpower.

The Fight: Under the direction of the borough fire department, crews battled the blaze for 38 minutes before bringing it under control.

The Discovery: Following the knockdown of the fire, the Arson Squad was summoned to the scene at 5:39 PM. At 6:51 PM, officials tragically confirmed that a body had been discovered inside the residence.
Injuries and Current Investigation
One firefighter sustained a minor injury while battling the blaze; they were treated at the scene and are expected to be fine.
As per standard protocol in the event of a fire-related death, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Arson Squad is working alongside local police to determine the cause and origin of the fire. As of Sunday morning, the identity of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
