Trenton NJ, New Jersey’s fiscal future is at a crossroads. As Governor Mikie Sherrill prepares to draft her first state spending plan, Assembly Republicans are sounding the alarm on “out-of-control” spending and offering a roadmap for fiscal restraint.

GOP Budget Officer Targets “Special Interest” Pork

Assemblyman Brian Rumpf (R-Ocean), the newly appointed Assembly Republican Budget Officer, is proactively identifying budget cuts to assist the new administration. This move follows a Senate committee confirmation hearing where acting state Treasurer Aaron Binder admitted that “spending cuts are a very important part” of the upcoming budget process.

Rumpf is pointing to approximately $846 million in the current budget that he claims is dedicated solely to special interest groups and politically connected projects.

“New Jersey’s budget needs to start from zero, prioritize constitutional responsibilities, and demonstrate fiscal restraint,” Rumpf stated.

The $25 Billion Spending Surge

The call for cuts comes after years of record-breaking growth in the state budget. Since the end of the Christie administration, New Jersey’s spending has skyrocketed:

  • 70% Increase: The budget has grown by nearly $25 billion since Gov. Chris Christie left office.

  • The Murphy Legacy: Under Gov. Phil Murphy, annual spending rose by approximately $20 billion from his first budget to his last.

Without significant intervention, the state faces a projected revenue gap in the billions by the start of the fiscal year on July 1.

“Feeding Frenzy”: Challenging the Affordability Mandate

Governor Sherrill herself has acknowledged the difficulty of the situation. In a recent interview, she described a late-term “feeding frenzy” by the previous administration that added $128 million in “pork projects”—including $26 million for World Cup marketing—just last month. Sherrill noted that this surge in spending directly undercuts her campaign’s core message of affordability for New Jersey residents.

Rumpf suggests that these recently approved funds “could and should be clawed back” to balance the books.

A Path Forward

The GOP is urging the Treasury to welcome bipartisan support to eliminate duplicative services and items that provide narrow benefits at a high cost to statewide taxpayers.

“There are hundreds of millions of dollars that can be saved right away,” says Rumpf, positioning the GOP as an objective eye to help rein in state spending.

  1. The state government is way overstaffed and bloated

  2. Bloated, yet ineffective. Have a sales tax question? Good luck speaking with someone. Been waiting over a year. But they take my check electronically every month, without fail. They are GREAT at taking money, but not so much answering questions. Classic Democrats.
