KEARNY, NJ — A 36-year-old IT employee at Hudson Arts and Science Charter Middle School in Kearny has been arrested and charged following allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct involving two students under the age of 13, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Omer Sogutcu, of Garfield, NJ, was arrested on June 5, 2025, at the school district’s office in Fair Lawn, officials confirmed. The arrest stems from an incident that allegedly took place in October 2024 at the Kearny school campus.

The prosecutor’s office stated that Sogutcu exposed himself to two minors and solicited them to engage in sexual conduct. The disturbing allegations prompted an immediate investigation by law enforcement authorities.

Immediate Response by iLearn Schools

Beanne DeGuzman, Senior Director of Philanthropy and Marketing at iLearn Schools, which operates the tuition-free Hudson Arts and Science Charter School, released a statement noting that Sogutcu was immediately removed from all contact with students upon learning of the investigation. He was also placed under strict supervision while authorities pursued the case.

“We take the safety of our students very seriously,” DeGuzman stated. “Our organization is fully cooperating with law enforcement to ensure justice is served and that our students remain safe.”

Ongoing Investigation

The case remains under active investigation by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, and additional charges may be forthcoming. Anyone with further information is encouraged to contact the authorities.

Bottom Line: This serious allegation at a Hudson County charter school underscores the importance of vigilant background checks, student safety policies, and transparent responses by educational institutions. The case serves as a stark reminder of the responsibility schools carry to protect children and swiftly respond to potential threats within their community.
