Allendale NJ, former FBI Director James Comey, originally from Allendale, New Jersey, is under investigation after posting a seemingly innocent beach photo to Instagram that federal officials claim may contain a coded threat against President Donald Trump.
The photo, which Comey has since deleted, showed seashells arranged in the shape of “86 47”. According to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, the post is being interpreted as a call for assassination, sparking immediate scrutiny from both the Secret Service and the FBI.
What Does “86 47” Mean?
The term “86” has multiple meanings, ranging from “to get rid of” or “eject” to, more recently, “to kill,” according to Merriam-Webster. The number “47” appears to reference Donald Trump, who is serving as the 47th President of the United States in his second term.
In the photo’s caption, Comey wrote:
“Cool shell formation on my beach walk.”
He later issued a follow-up post:
“I posted earlier a picture of some shells I saw today on a beach walk, which I assumed were a political message. I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence. It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down.”
Federal Authorities Launch Investigation
The Secret Service confirmed that it is “vigorously investigating” any post that could be interpreted as a threat to the President. An FBI spokesperson said they are working with the Secret Service, with primary jurisdiction residing with the latter.
“We take this responsibility very seriously and we are aware of the social media posts in question,” the Secret Service stated.
Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) called for an immediate investigation, alleging the post violates federal laws on interstate threats.
“If Comey broke the law, he shouldn’t get a pass. He should be in handcuffs,” Ogles said.
Comey’s History with Trump
James Comey, an Obama-era appointee, was fired by Donald Trump in 2017 while leading investigations into Russian election interference and Hillary Clinton’s email practices. Comey has since become a vocal critic of Trump, publishing books including the memoir A Higher Loyalty and the upcoming crime novel FDR Drive.
