HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ – An intense extrication operation unfolded late Friday night, October 10th, on Route 17 North at the intersection of Franklin Avenue following a serious multi-vehicle accident. The incident required the immediate deployment of specialized rescue equipment and a critical mutual aid response, underscoring the vital teamwork among Bergen County first responders.
The Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department (HHFQ), under the command of Chiefs 60, 61, and 62, along with Squad 1 and Engine 2, raced to the scene around 11:00 PM. Upon arrival, incident commanders confirmed a harrowing scenario: a driver was heavily trapped inside their vehicle and was reported to be unconscious.
The “10-30” Extrication Call
Given the severity of the entrapment, Hasbrouck Heights Chiefs immediately transmitted a 10-30 signal, an emergency call for additional rescue and manpower. The call was swiftly answered by the Wood-Ridge Fire Department, whose members rushed to the scene to assist in the complex extrication.
Working side-by-side in the challenging, late-night conditions of the busy Route 17 corridor, fire crews utilized the Jaws of Life and other specialized tools to systematically dismantle parts of the heavily damaged vehicle. Their professional, coordinated efforts led to the successful release of the trapped driver.
Once extricated, the driver was immediately transferred to EMS personnel on standby for urgent medical care and transport to a local hospital.
This incident is a powerful example of the proficiency and selfless collaboration between the Hasbrouck Heights and Wood-Ridge Fire Departments, whose mutual aid agreement is essential for high-stakes rescue operations in the area.
