Jersey City Man Busted for Self-inflicted Gun Shot Wounds at Englewood Hospital

Englewood NJ, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of 40-year-old JOEL GALVIS of Jersey City, NJ on weapons-related offenses in Englewood, NJ. These charges are the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Chief Matthew Finck, and the Englewood Police Department, under the direction of Chief Thomas Greeley.

On Friday, September 19, 2025, at approximately 6:27 a.m., the Englewood Police Department responded to Englewood Hospital after an individual arrived at the facility with an apparent gunshot wound. Responding officers located JOEL GALVIS who was seeking treatment for a gunshot injury to his leg. Detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit were also notified and responded to the hospital, initiating a joint investigation with the Englewood Police Department. The investigation revealed that JOEL GALVIS sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg and then drove himself to Englewood Hospital. During a court-authorized search of GALVIS’ vehicle, which was located nearby, investigators recovered two firearms and a high-capacity ammunition magazine. In addition, detectives determined that the serial number of one of the firearms was defaced.

On Friday, September 19, 2025, as a result of the investigation, JOEL GALVIS was charged with two counts of second-degree possession of a firearm, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5B(1); one count of second-degree certain persons not to possess a firearm, N.J.S.A. 2C:7B(1); one count of fourth-degree possession of a defaced firearm, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-3D; and one count of fourth-degree possession of a large capacity ammunition magazine, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-3J. GALVIS was treated for his injury, released from the hospital into police custody, and remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, NJ.

Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations, and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. He would like to thank the Englewood Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this investigation.
