WASHINGTON, D.C. – The nation’s longest government shutdown in years is now in its perilous fourth week, and the political stalemate has just taken a dramatic turn. The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), representing over 800,000 federal workers, has issued a powerful and public demand for Senate Democrats to immediately pass a stopgap funding bill and reopen the government.
The plea from the nation’s largest federal workers’ union puts immense new pressure on key Senate leaders, including Chuck Schumer, who have repeatedly blocked a Republican-backed measure, seeking to attach policy demands to the funding bill.
“End This Shutdown Today”: Union Demands Clean Bill
Everett Kelley, President of the AFGE, was direct and forceful in his statement, calling for an immediate halt to what he termed a “national disgrace.”
“It’s time to pass a clean continuing resolution and end this shutdown today,” Kelley said.
A “clean continuing resolution” (CR) is a temporary spending measure that would simply fund the government at current levels without the addition of controversial policy provisions or political riders. By calling for a clean CR, the union is explicitly asking Democrats to set aside their legislative demands and prioritize getting federal employees paid.
The Human Cost: Wages, Hardship, and Food Banks
The core of the AFGE’s reasoning is the devastating financial hardship being inflicted on federal employees.
- Missed Paychecks: Hundreds of thousands of workers, including essential personnel like TSA agents, border patrol, and food safety inspectors, are being forced to work without pay or are furloughed, having now missed multiple paychecks.
- A “National Disgrace”: Kelley emphasized that workers are not interested in partisan blame or “political games.” They are looking for the wages they earned, a lack of which is forcing patriotic Americans—parents, veterans, and caregivers—to rely on food banks to survive.
- SNAP Benefits at Risk: The shutdown’s impact extends beyond federal workers, threatening critical programs like SNAP (food stamps) for millions of vulnerable Americans if the impasse continues.
While other federal unions, such as the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU), have maintained a stance simply calling for the shutdown to end, the AFGE’s direct request for a clean CR puts a spotlight on Democratic strategy and may force a shift in their position.
As the shutdown enters its fourth week, the economic damage mounts, and the moral pressure from the workforce grows, all eyes are on the Senate to see if the powerful appeal from the AFGE will finally break the legislative gridlock.
