Mahwah NJ Police Seize $19,000 Cash, Seek Two Men on Money Laundering Charges

MAHWAH, NJ — Police in Mahwah are searching for two men from Maine and New Hampshire after seizing nearly $19,000 in cash behind a Bergen County hotel earlier this month.

According to Mahwah police, the incident occurred on July 9 around 4:15 p.m. when Officer Timothy Knutelsky noticed suspicious activity involving a vehicle parked behind a hotel on Route 17.

Suspicious Vehicle Leads to Cash Discovery

When Officer Knutelsky approached the vehicle to speak with its occupants, he observed “indicators of criminal activity,” police said.

Additional officers, including William Reardon, Greg Lehman, and Anthony LoFaro, as well as a K-9 unit, arrived to assist in the investigation.

Inside the vehicle, officers discovered $19,090 in U.S. currency, packaged in a way “consistent with criminal activity,” authorities reported.

The two men in the vehicle provided conflicting explanations for why they had the cash, prompting officers to confiscate the money while investigating its origins.

Arrest Warrants Issued

After a follow-up investigation, arrest warrants were issued for:

• Jamil Goforth, 44, of Lewiston, Maine

• Jai Lebron, 45, of Brentwood, New Hampshire

Both men are wanted on money laundering charges.
