Trenton, NJ – Federal law enforcement is significantly escalating its presence in New Jersey, a state self-declared as a “sanctuary.” Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Newark and the FBI’s Newark Field Office have officially launched a new Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF), dramatically increasing coordination between federal, state, and local agencies to combat transnational crime, gang violence, and narcotics trafficking.
The move comes as the federal government signals an intensified focus on criminal elements allegedly exploiting sanctuary policies as a safe haven.
Why the New Task Force Now?
The establishment of the New Jersey HSTF is part of a national directive stemming from an executive order aimed at strengthening the nation’s defenses against foreign and domestic threats.
This unified approach aims to dismantle sophisticated criminal networks, providing a powerful answer to what federal authorities perceive as a growing security challenge. The task force is designed to centralize intelligence and resources, ensuring a faster, more effective response to evolving threats.
“As the threats facing our nation continue to grow in both scale and complexity, our response must be unified, precise, and unwavering,” said HSI Newark Special Agent in Charge Michael S. McCarthy. “The HSTF embodies that commitment… ensuring that criminal networks have nowhere to hide.”
A Model of Unified Enforcement
The new HSTF is built on the proven success of existing collaborative initiatives between HSI and the FBI in New Jersey, which already involve over 200 local police officers.
Key areas of focus for the expanded task force include:
-
Violent Gangs and Street Narcotics: Utilizing six existing Safe Streets Task Forces (SSTF).
-
Cartel-Linked Trafficking: Enhancing the work of two Transnational Organized Crime Task Forces (TOCTF) targeting drug and weapons smuggling.
-
Border Security: Including the HSI Newark Airport Task Force, which investigates smuggling through major regional airports.
-
Southern NJ Crime: Leveraging the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Unit near Camden to reduce drug distribution and violent crime.
FBI Newark Special Agent in Charge Stefanie Roddy highlighted that the initiative represents the “power of partnership,” uniting diverse agencies to protect the public through real-time intelligence sharing.
Early National Impact: Over 3,200 Arrests
The nationwide HSTF operation, which the New Jersey team is now joining, has already demonstrated significant impact.
| Operation Period | Arrests (Offenders Apprehended) | Narcotics Seized | Key Targets |
| Aug. 25 – Oct. 7 | 3,266 | Over 91 metric tons | Individuals tied to terrorism, transnational crime, and narcotraffickers. |
Federal authorities describe this early success as a “model for protecting the homeland,” emphasizing that the joint framework improves both local and national resilience against criminal organizations.
