Map of US Shows How Your State’s Internet Speed Stacks Up Against the Rest

But in Akamai’s 2014 State of the Internet report, it becomes painfully clear that internet speeds in the United States lag compared to the rest of the world leaders. In fact, the United States doesn’t even fall into the top 10 in average connection speeds.

In the first quarter of 2014, Virginia’s average connection speed came in at 13.7 mbps – just more than half of the average speed of world leader South Korea:

  1. Really misleading statistics. Only Japan, Finland and Sweden are bigger than Virginia and I’d venture to guess that the top 2/3 of those Nordic countries are uninhabited. If you look at the Northeast corridor of the US — Va to MA, even the comparison with Japan is pretty good. Not reasonable to ask that a (still mostly) rural state like Texas have the kind of connect speed possible in 426 sq mi HK.

Take it from someone who travels internationally, has friends and business associates overseas, and has studied the varying internet speeds throughout the world. We are not good. In the very early days of the net, we were definitely way out in front. However, we have not kept up and have been overtaken considerably over the years.
