Ocean County, New Jersey, has rapidly spread, burning 8,500 acres and forcing the evacuation of 3,000 residents. Dubbed the “Jones Wildfire,” the blaze began around 12:30 p.m. at the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area in Barnegat Township and quickly extended into Lacey Township and Ocean Township.
Firefighting Efforts & Evacuation Response
By 11:00 p.m. Tuesday night, fire crews had the blaze only 10% contained, despite the deployment of local, county, and state fire services. The fire’s speed and intensity caused widespread panic, prompting evacuations and shutting down major roadways, including a section of the Garden State Parkway, leading to severe traffic disruptions.
Homes and Infrastructure at Risk
The wildfire has threatened over 1,320 structures across the affected townships and caused thousands of power outages as flames encroached on neighborhoods and utility lines. Thick, white smoke plumes blanketed the skies, dramatically reducing air quality and visibility throughout the region.
Evacuation Shelters Established
Emergency shelters were quickly established to accommodate displaced residents:
-
Southern Regional High School – 105 Cedar Bridge Road, Manahawkin, NJ
-
Manchester Township High School – 101 Hawks Way, Manchester, NJ
Local officials and volunteers are providing food, water, and temporary accommodations while firefighting crews work around the clock to contain the flames.
Cause of Fire Under Investigation
As of now, no injuries have been reported, and the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions and fire behavior to prevent further spread.
