NEW YORK, NY – In a stunning move that reshapes the New York City mayoral contest, sitting Mayor Eric Adams formally suspended his re-election campaign on Sunday. The announcement, delivered via a video from Gracie Mansion, comes amid escalating pressure and financial strain to clear the crowded field and prevent a victory by socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani.
Adams, who was polling in fourth place behind frontrunner Mamdani, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
The Campaign Killer: Financial Woes and Federal Pressure
In his farewell address, Adams cited two main factors that crippled his campaign:
- Funding Disadvantage: Adams directly blamed the city’s Campaign Finance Board for repeatedly withholding millions of dollars in matching public funds, which severely undermined his ability to raise necessary campaign capital.
- Reputation Damage: He admitted the “unfortunate events surrounding my federal case,” which was recently dismissed by the Department of Justice, continued to be a liability. Adams stood by his record, stating he was “wrongfully charged because I fought for this city.”
While Mayor Adams was reportedly involved in backroom talks with White House officials regarding a potential ambassadorship (which ultimately fizzled), the combined pressure of poor polling and financial barriers made his continuation untenable.
Adams Touts Triumphs, Slams Opponents
Despite the turbulent end to his campaign, Adams touted his administration’s major successes over his first term (2022–2025):
- Crime Reduction: Adams, a former police captain, celebrated significantly reduced crime rates and shootings down to historic lows, crediting his administration and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Over his term, the NYPD recovered more than 23,000 illegal guns.
- Migrant Crisis: Thanks to policy adjustments, the strain on city resources eased dramatically, with migrant arrivals dropping from a peak of 4,000 per week to fewer than 100.
- Housing: His administration focused on protecting more than 400,000 affordable units and paving the way for the construction of one million new homes.
Adams did not endorse any remaining candidates but issued a strong, clear warning—a blatant swipe at Mamdani—about the danger of local government being used to “launder radical ideals.”
The Remaining Race: Cuomo vs. Mamdani
Adams’ exit, while ensuring his mayoralty ends after a single roller-coaster term, is seen by many pundits as a strategic blow to Mamdani. Polls currently suggest that Andrew Cuomo, running as an independent after losing the Democratic primary to Mamdani, has the best chance of winning in a one-on-one race.
However, Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa has vowed to stay in the race, complicating the field and keeping fears alive among moderate and conservative voters that the split vote could guarantee a Mamdani victory.
Despite suspending his bid, Eric Adams will remain on the November 4th ballot, along with fellow independent Jim Walden, who also dropped his campaign.
Adams concluded his address with a promise: “I want to be clear, although this is the end of my campaign, this will not be the end of my public service. I will keep fighting for the city, no matter what.”

The rules should be changed. If you are not a taxpayer you cannot vote.
When the majority of voters are receiving welfare they vote in a candidate who will continue the bs.
Adams is as dumb as a stump.
typical big city mayor elected for color not competence
I came extremely close to buying a Manhattan apartment several years ago, as we were looking for a place following the standard kids graduated high school Ridgewood thing. NYC was a fantastic place back then, coming off the Guiliani-Bloomberg era. All I can say is I dodged a bullet.
