EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – With New York gaming officials officially greenlighting three casinos in NYC, New Jersey is moving to protect its turf. State officials and business executives are readying a massive “North Jersey Casino” push to prevent gambling dollars from flooding across the Hudson River.

While the “Blue Wall” of Atlantic City has traditionally held the exclusive rights to NJ gaming, a new constitutional amendment is being prepared for the 2026 ballot—one that could change the face of the Meadowlands forever.

The NYC Threat: Queens and the Bronx Get the Green Light

On December 15, the New York Gaming Commission gave final approval for two casinos in Queens and one in the Bronx. While Manhattan was spared for now, the proximity of these new venues has triggered a “call to action” in Trenton.

State Senator Paul Sarlo (D-Wood Ridge) argues that the NYC locations pose the “least amount of competition” compared to Manhattan, but believes New Jersey must act now to remain a global destination.

The Meadowlands Vision: More Than Just a “Gambling Hall”

The proposed plan isn’t just about slot machines. If voters approve the amendment in 2026, the Meadowlands could see a $2 billion transformation including:

  • World-Class Convention Center: A proposed 460,000-square-foot facility to rival the Javits Center, estimated at $1.6 billion.

  • Luxury Destination Amenities: Industry experts say the new casino must include high-end dining, “destination” pools, entertainment showrooms, and niche sports betting (like “slapfight” matches).

  • Hotel Expansion: Plans include a 1,000-room “headquarters hotel” and two additional privately developed hotels.

  • Central Jersey Expansion: The plan also includes a second casino license for Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport.

“After we leave the world stage when the FIFA World Cup exits New Jersey [in 2026], our next focus should be constructing a world-class convention center and casino at the Meadowlands,” said Senator Paul Sarlo.

Why 2026 is Different from the 2016 Failure

In 2016, a North Jersey casino referendum failed by a staggering 4-to-1 ratio. However, proponents like Jeff Gural (owner of the Meadowlands Racetrack) believe the landscape has shifted:

  1. Specificity: The new proposal will likely pinpoint the Meadowlands and Monmouth Park specifically, rather than the “anywhere in North Jersey” language that scared voters in 2016.

  2. Sports Betting Success: Since 2018, NJ has become a national leader in sports betting, proving the massive appetite for gaming in the region.

  3. Revenue Reality: With NYC moving forward, the argument shifts from “Do we want casinos?” to “Do we want to lose tax revenue to New York?”

Timeline to the Ballot

For a constitutional amendment to reach voters in November 2026, the NJ Legislature must pass the resolution by June 2026. This would require either a supermajority in a single vote or a simple majority in two consecutive years.
