MIDLAND PARK, NJ — July 6, 2025 — It’s been 10 years since Officer Christopher Birch tragically lost his life in an off-duty ATV accident, but the Midland Park community continues to honor his memory, celebrate his legacy, and reflect on the impact he had both in and out of uniform.

Birch, who passed away on July 6, 2015, at the age of 31, had served eight years with the Midland Park Police Department. He was a resident of Wyckoff and previously lived in North Haledon.

Remembering a Hero and Friend

Known for his bright personality, generous spirit, and infectious sense of humor, Birch left an indelible mark on his fellow officers, his community, and everyone who knew him.

“Chris was a very outgoing, intelligent and fun-loving guy,” said Midland Park Police Chief Michael Powderley. “He was a good-hearted person and a great friend. He got along with everyone — not just in the Police Department, but also with the public. It was a big loss for us.”

Chief Powderley, who was on the force when Birch was hired in 2007, recalled that the department had plans to promote Birch prior to his untimely passing.

A Community Still Mourning, Still Celebrating

Each year, the Midland Park Police Department and the wider community take time to remember Birch. In a Facebook post commemorating the 10th anniversary, the department wrote:

“It’s been 10 years since you left us without saying goodbye. Your spirit and legacy remain. We miss you, Chris.”

In 2018, the town dedicated a memorial bench in front of Borough Hall to honor Officer Birch’s memory. During the ceremony, Mayor Harry Shortway Jr. reflected on working with Birch:

“He was a sharp cop, always had a smile for everyone, and did a great job as a police officer.”

A Legacy of Giving Back

Even off duty, Birch was dedicated to serving others. Every February, he participated in the Polar Bear Plunge at Seaside Heights, raising funds for Special Olympics New Jersey — an event that exemplified his passion for helping those in need.

In 2016, Birch’s parents, Jim and Donna, were presented with a pencil portrait of their son, drawn by Ridgewood Police Officer Patrick Elwood, a close friend. The portrait captured Birch’s signature smile and warmth.

“Chris always smiled, and this portrait truly captures the happiness in his eyes,” Donna Birch said.

His wife, Karen, echoed the sentiment:

“It’s an amazing picture that captures not only my husband but the incredible bond shared between police officers and the brotherhood of law enforcement.”

Tributes from Neighboring Departments

On the 10th anniversary, police departments from across Bergen County shared heartfelt tributes:

  • Ridgewood Police Department wrote:

“Midland Park Officer Christopher Birch was always there to back us up and brighten our days with his fun and positive attitude.”

  • Glen Rock Police Department posted:

“We remember and miss him every day. Wish you were still here with us, brother.”
