NEW YORK, NY — Chaos and tragedy struck Midtown Manhattan on Monday when a gunman opened fire inside a high-rise office building at 345 Park Avenue, leaving five people dead, including an NYPD officer, and several others injured.
The shooter, identified as Shane Devon Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, acted alone, officials said. Tamura died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after carrying out the violent attack across multiple floors of the high-profile building.
Gunman Opens Fire in Midtown Office Tower
According to law enforcement sources, the shooter was armed with a rifle and began his deadly rampage in the lobby of the building located at 52nd Street and Park Avenue, which houses companies such as Blackstone, KPMG, and the NFL headquarters.
After firing shots in the lobby, Tamura proceeded to other floors, eventually making his way to the 33rd floor, where he turned the weapon on himself. Surveillance footage captured the suspect wearing sunglasses and holding the weapon as he approached the building.
Officer Killed Identified as Didarul Islam
Among the victims was NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who was working off-duty as security in the building. A second officer was also shot but survived. A total of six people were shot, with four civilians and the shooter pronounced dead.
Curtis Sliwa, GOP mayoral candidate, praised Islam’s heroism, stating:
“Police Officer Didarul Islam gave his life protecting New Yorkers from danger. He represented the very best of our NYPD — brave, selfless, and committed. We will never forget his sacrifice.”
NYPD, FBI, and Federal Agencies Respond
The NYPD responded swiftly to the unfolding incident, aided by tactical units and officers in protective gear who searched the building floor by floor to ensure no additional threats were present.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed that the FBI New York Field Office was assisting the NYPD on the ground. He noted:
“The FBI is on scene at the Manhattan crime scene. The NYPD currently has the lead in this investigation. Our personnel are there to support their efforts. Motive is currently under investigation.”
In addition, U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton has established a federal command post to coordinate with the FBI and NYPD, as confirmed by Attorney General Pam Bondi.
NYC Officials Urge Caution and Pray for Victims
Mayor Eric Adams issued a warning during the active shooter response:
“Please take proper safety precautions if you are in the vicinity and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street.”
The city’s emergency system also alerted residents to expect traffic and public transit delays in the area.
New York Attorney General Letitia James expressed condolences, writing:
“Praying for our law enforcement and the New Yorkers impacted in the shooting situation this evening in Manhattan.”
Investigation Ongoing
As of now, no motive has been officially determined. Law enforcement officials continue to investigate Tamura’s background and what led him to carry out the mass shooting.
